Free is nearly a thing of the past in today's economy but camping in Georgia has plenty to offer those who enjoy the outdoors. Somewhere in the northwest corner of the state is a little hidden gem where a vacation paradise awaits you. To begin your free Georgia vacation, take Interstate 75 to the Adairsville exit and head west on Georgia highway 140. Turn right on U.S. 27 and head north until you reach Summerville. Turn left on Georgia highway 48 and go through the town of Menlo. Turn right on Georgia highway 157 and travel about two miles. The free camping area and parking is on the left by Lake Ashcroft.

There is 700 acres of gorgeous Georgia land to spend your free camping trip at. You will have to haul in your gear so plan ahead for that tip. There is free primitive dispersed camping throughout the area so come prepared for your toiletry needs. Primitive camping in all its glory means making do for your doo-doo. Free Activities

Fishing
is definitely a must during your free camping adventure in Georgia. Lake Ashcroft offers bass fishing and the East Fork Little River runs along the west side of the forest area.

Hiking & Bird Watching is another free sport that is also popular while primitive camping in this part of beautiful North Georgia. It may be a small area in comparison to the Chattahoochee National Forest but you will see plenty of birds.

Camping in the North Georgia Mountains is so amazing and when you camp for free you are going primitive style. If you run out of water while camping primitive and you don't want to haul your water from the river, you can always learn how to catch rainwater for free. In just a few minutes you can catch all your camping water needs. Although there are creeks and streams throughout Georgia, it is much easier to catch free rainwater than to boil and filter river water.

This particular area of Georgia is great for backpackers and weekend camping because you will have to haul in your gear to the campsite. Parking is only allowed in the parking area provided.

Free Nearby Attractions

For those who like trains, stop in at the Adairsville Rail Depot Age of Steam Museum . This is a free attraction that you can enjoy on your trip back home from your camping vacation.

About twenty miles east of Adairsville is the Funk Heritage Center in Waleska. This is a living history museum dedicated to Southeastern Indian interpretation. A must see on your free camping adventure in the North Georgia Mountains.

Camping Tips

This area of Georgia is so beautiful and because it is not a well known area, it's a great location for a quiet getaway for a free camping adventure. You may also want to check the weather first during winter months, as all areas of Georgia have seen snow, ice or both for the last two winters.
