Free Canine Distemper Vaccines in May at SPCA of Central Florida

In February 2010, an outbreak of canine distemper in Florida reminded veterinarians and pet owners of the importance of vaccinating against this incurable, yet 100 percent preventable, disease.

The SPCA of Central Florida is offering free canine distemper vaccinations at its location in Orlando on Saturdays and Sundays in May.

There is no limit on the number of dogs you may get vaccinated at no charge. Free vaccinations are available from 8 to 10 a.m. on these dates in May: May 8-9, May 15-16, May 22-23 and May 29-30. No appointment is necessary.

On February 18, University of Florida veterinarians reported an increase of the canine distemper virus in local wildlife, which put the area's unvaccinated pet population and shelter animals at risk.

"The disease is quite contagious, and once a dog is infected with the virus, there is no effective treatment. More than 50 percent of the dogs that contract canine distemper will eventually die from it," said Julie Levy, D.V.M., Ph.D., director of the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at UF's College of Veterinary Medicine, in a February news release.

In addition to the increase of local wildlife distemper cases, Orange County Animal Services dealt with an outbreak of the disease in the early part of 2010.

Early symptoms of canine distemper can resemble a cold, including a high fever, loss of appetite, runny nose and discharge from the eyes. As the disease progresses, more severe symptoms can occur, including vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, labored breathing, weight loss and death.

While treatment options are available, there is no cure, so the best course of action is to ensure your pet is vaccinated yearly.

Additionally, be sure to report any sick wildlife to your local animal control office.
