Free Children

Fritz Fimmel

Free children lie atop the peak of the world
In soft and silent sleep.

There is no fear of tomorrow,
For silence in endless dreams,
Never to wake,
Never to see the light of dawn.

Free children lie atop the peak of the world,
Free of the burden of this life,
Free of the toil of our world,
Free of all things that we loathe,
And apart from all that we love.

Free children, still and asleep.
Free children, beyond our reach.
Their world has turned to darkness,
Their eyelids fastened shut.
Never again to see.
Never again to touch.
Never again to feel.

And does it bring to you pity?
Does it bring to you sorrow?
Or do you feel that they are lucky?
Now free of this world of our making.

Free children lie atop the peak of the world,
In soft and silent sleep.
