First, check out local magazines such as S.A. Kids and Current which publish monthly calendars that list free kids events. Both of these magazines can be found on the free magazine racks located at the entrance of grocery and mass retail stores. The events that are no cost have the word "free" in bold at the end of the calendar entries.
Also, the City of San Antonio lists free events on their website. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a full year's worth of events such as movies in the park and seasonal activities like Easter egg hunts. And the San Antonio Public Library system offers family fun activities, arts and crafts, and age appropriate storytimes.
Even some retailers offer free kids activities to entice parents into their stores. Bookstores such as Barnes and Nobles and locally owned Red Balloons offer weekly storytimes. And hobby shops such as Michael's and Home Depot offer Kids Clubs where children can make free craft projects onsite. These activities are usually held during the weekend at various locations throughout San Antonio. Even Sylvan Learning Centers will show your 5 - 12 year old how to make a free take home art project every Saturday morning.
And don't overlook religious institutions. Most tend to be family, and especially, kid oriented. Many churches offer free youth programs for your child to: be taught about spirituality, play sports, or just hang out with other peers in a safe environment. Depending on the church, a children's choir or drama department may also be available.
So, now you don't have to take your child to expensive San Antonio tourist locations for him to have fun. Many different institutions have free events for local children. This means you can keep your child entertained for only the cost of gas to transport him to the event. Do some research and check out some of the many free resources available for the kids of San Antonio. It will only cost you a little time. And your child and your wallet will be glad you did.
