The DIY Family Christmas Tree

Christmas is a time of joy, peace, and happiness unless your on a tight budget. There is nothing more stressful then trying to get everything pieced together for the holidays, with little money to work with. Fortunately, decorating Christmas tree doesn't have to cost a fortune. Decorating the Christmas tree should be fun, and it's an event that the entire family can take part in.

First things first, you need a tree. You can find affordable live pre-cut tree's. Check local flyers for Christmas tree sales. Usually the first weekend following Christmas you can find tree's on sale at home improvement stores such as Lowe's, or Home Depot. If your not in the mood dealing with falling needles that come with a live tree, then you might want to stick with an artificial one. Artificial trees don't come cheap either, but occasionally you can find them on sale. You can also find artificial trees on www.craigslist.com for little to nothing. And if your budget is really tight try posting a wanted ad on sites such as www.craigslist.com or www.freecycle.org. There are people out there willing to donate there old tree for free.

Decorations don't need to break the bank either. As a matter of fact, you can find plenty of free decorations lying around the house. Small pinecones make wonderful decorations, and you can have fun collecting them. You can also use fake snow to decorate them, and add more color to your tree. Fake snow is cheap to buy, or you can even make your own. To make fake snow, rip of tiny pieces of toilet tissue and place them in a bowl. Next add white school glue to the mix. If you want them to shine, you can even sprinkle in some opal colored glitter. You want enough glue to make you mix into a paste. Finally, using a stiff paint brush or your fingers, dab the mixture onto the pine cones. It will take about 12 hours for them to completely dry, but once they do they are beautiful.

Other things that you can use are small stuffed animals, such as beanie babies. These make the tree fun and exciting for the children. Another quick fix is presents. You can make small presents by wrapping empty boxes such as juice boxes, old jewelry boxes, and even left small candy boxes such as Nerd boxes. This is also a great way to use those tiny pieces of left over wrapping paper. And lets not forget the bows. Bows look very cute place on a Christmas tree. Candy canes are very inexpensive and these hanging on the tree also ad a treat for the children.

There are plenty of ways to make your tree look wonderful without spending much money. Honestly, the children love making little decorations, and helping out so much that in my opinion every tree should have their own special touches that aren't straight from the package. Your tree might not win the designer tree of the year award, but everyone who looks at it will know they love, and happiness your family holds in their hearts.
