Free Christmas Music and Plays in Atlanta, Georgia

Rhetta Akamatsu
Outside of Nativity plays in churches or children's plays in school, Atlanta does not have a lot of

free theatrical performances. People willingly pay and throng to see A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, and other holiday favorites all over the metro area, but free tickets are rare. Check with local churches and schools closer to Christmas if you would like to see tradtional Christmas stories enacted.

But when it comes to music, that is another story. The city and all of the metro area bursts with free music all season long. Many events are not listed yet, but here are some times and locations sponsored by local churches and colleges to get you started.

Kick off the season Sunday, November 23rd, at 7:30 P.M., with "Carols by Candlelight" at McEachern Memorial United Methodist Church, 4075 Macland Road, Powder Springs. Frank Boggs will direct this annual program of holiday carols, with Cathy Adams on piano and John Innes on organ.

If you miss the performance at McEachern Memorial, you can catch "Carols by Candlelight" again on December 4th at 7:30 PM at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, 955 Johnson Ferry Road, in Marietta.

On December 3rd, the Joyful Noise Gospel Choir will perform its annual winter concert at Agnes Scott College, 141 E. College Avenue, in Decatur. The performance will take place at 8 P.M. in Gaines Chapel.

Also on December 3rd, North Avenue Presbyterian Church at 607 Peachtree Street N.E. in Atlanta will offer a Lunch Hour Holiday Concert with member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performing a Christmas carol concert. Don't pass up this opportunity to experience the Atlanta Symphony in a free performance!

Take part in a true Atlanta tradition Friday, December 5 through Sunday December 7, as Spelman and Morehouse Colleges offer their joint yearly Christmas Carol Concert. On Friday and Sunday, the concert will take place at 8 PM at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel on the Morehouse College Campus, located at 830 Westview Drive SW, in Atlanta. On Saturday, the concert will take place at Sisters Chapel at Spelman College, 350 Spelman Lane SW, Atlanta. These performances are among Atlanta's most beloved free holiday events.

There will be plenty of other opportunities to enjoy the sounds of the season in Atlanta coming up. If you are planning a trip to the Metro area, keep your eye on the Atlanta Journal website to plan your free holiday events. Locals, keep your eyes and ears open as well, and get ready to have a merry, musical Christmas!
