A Guide to Free Christmas Music Concerts and Plays in the Nashville Area
The Blair School of Music has many choices of free musical concerts available to the public scheduled this year. The events will be held at various locations throughout the city. Their Christmas concerts are a favorite treat among Nashville music goers. You can find their Christmas schedule below. - The Blair Children's Suzuki Violin and Cello program performs a holiday concert on December 6, 2008 at 2 pm. The program features 50 young violin and cello students ages 5-13 performing traditional Christmas carols and music selections as well as selected classical works. The concert is free to the public. The concert will be held a t the Frist center for the Visual Arts located at 919 Broadway in downtown Nashville, TN. Call 615-244-3340 for parking and other information.
- The Blair Childrens Chorus will present its Winter Concert featuring selected holiday pieces at the Blair School of Music located at Vanderbuilt University at 2400 Blakemore Avenue in Nashville, Tn. The concert will be held on Friday December 12,2008 at 7:30 pm. Admission is free to the general public. The entrance to the Blair School of Music is located on Childrens way and parking for the event is at the South Garage. The performance will be held in Ingram Hall on the Vanderbuilt campus.
Belmont University is giving a free concert series throughout the holiday season as it's gift to Nashville to be performed at various locations. The five series concert will feature a variety of genres and performers each exhibiting their exceptional talent and promoting the holiday spirit with various selections of Christmas and other holiday music. - Friday, December 5, 2008 the Nashville Children's Choir will hold its annual holiday concert at 7 pm at Belmont Heights Baptist Church located at 2100 Belmont Boulevard. No tickets are needed for this event and it is free to the general public
- Saturday, December 6, 2008 Christmas at Belmont will be held at 7 pm at the Massey Concert Hall on the Belmont University campus. The event features Brenda Lee as host and performances of holiday music by the Belmont Orchestra and university choirs and ensambles. Admission is free for the event but seating is limited so tickets will need to be reserved in advance. The event will also air on Nashville Public Television this year at 7 pm on tuesday December 23 and again on nationwide PBS on Christmas Day.
- Sunday, December 7, 2008 Lessons and Carols with Belle Voci will invite the public to enjoy traditional American and British Christmas carols and music at 4:30 pm at the Wightman Chapel in the Scarritt-Bennet Center located at 1008 19th Ave. South in downtown Nashville,TN. Admission is free and no tickets are needed.
- Tuesday, Decmeber 9, 2008 the Belmont Camerata Musicale presnets A Camerata Christmas at the historic Belmont Mansion on the university campus at 7:30 pm. The presentation will include selections of holiday chamber music and traditional holiday folk music and sing alongs. Admissin is free to the general public and no tickets are needed in advance.
- Wednesday, December 24, 2008 Dr. Richard Shadinger, associate dean of the Belmont University School of music will present the traditional Christmas Eve Carillon Concert at the campus Bell tower at 2 pm. The concert will feature traditional Christmas music played on the tower's 42 bell carillon. The campus Bell tower is located just off the corner of Belmont Boulevard and Portland Avenue. This concert will be an outdoor event. Admission is free and tickets are not needed.
Lipscomb University will present A Cappella and Concert Band Christmas Concert on December 8, 2008 at 7:30 pm. Feature muicians will perform a wide range of classical and contemporary Holiday selections. Admission is free. What Christmas season would be complete without a traditional handbell musical concert? Music City Bronze, a local handbell ensamble will perform a holiday handbell concert at the Andrew Price Memorial United Methodist Church located at 2846 Lebanon Pike in Nashville, TN on Monday December 15,2008 at 7 pm. Admission is free to the general public. The concert is sure to be a real treat for music lovers wanting to get into the holiday spirit.
Jazz lovers can catch a free holiday concert at The Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The center will present a Holiday Concert by the Tennessee State University Musicians on Saturday December 13, 2008 at 2 pm. The program features jazz and traditional selections of holiday classical music. On Sunday December 14, 2008 the Center will feature a Holiday Concert by the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra Flute Ensamble at 2 pm. Admission for both events is free to the public. For those who want to enjoy the flavor of the holiday spirit from a world wide perspective, The Metro Parks Cultural Arts department will present its annual Holiday Recorder concert at the Parthenon on Thursday December 11, 2008 at 6 pm. The concert is free to the public and this years feature perfomers include Mon Ami led by Marcus Mendenhall, Callisto directed by Ron Olson, Renaissance Kids directed by Linda Friend, and Centennial Recorder Consort led by Daisy Rippy. The performers will play selected holiday pieces ranging from traditional medieval to contemporary music from around the world. Admission is free to the public. Join Nashvillians in support of those less fortunate this year with The Concert Chorale of Nashville. The local group will hold a free charity holiday music concert to benefit the homeless. the concert will be held at Christ the King Church on Belmont Boulevard on Sunday December 7, 2008 at 3:30 pm. An anonymous donor will give $10 to the Room at the Inn program for winter housing for homeless people for every person who attends the concert and a love offering will be taken to benefit the program. Looking for a way to celeberate the Christmas season with some cultural arts for the kiddies? Check out The Nashville Public Library childrens theatre as they presents Tall Tale Circus. A free musical extravaganza depicting great American literary tall tale figures like Pecos Bill, Calamity Jane, John Henry and a surprise guest. The show runs about 55 minutes and tickets are free. The Tall Tale Circus will run from November 14th through December 27, 2008. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 am and 11:30 am. No shows Thanksgiving weekend. Many of the areas churches open their doors to invite everyone to join in the holiday spirit with public performances of their chiors and childrens Christmas pagents throughout the holiday season, call any local area church for details. Other places to look for free Christmas events include local area malls which annually hold free Christmas performances by various artists and short plays for the entertainment of their shoppers, local bookstores which hold free storytime events and will have various Christmas characters live and in person to visit with shoppers and read stories to the kiddies, and of course we can't leave out Nashville's famous Opryland Hotel which has annual Christmas events free to the public such as story telling, skits and musical performances held in their observatory throughout the holiday season.
