Free Christmas Presents that Anyone Can Make at Home

Cindy Wright
Christmas does not have to cost you an arm and leg. You can create beautiful free Christmas presents you can make at home for your family and friends. Free Christmas presents can be made for anyone on your shopping list whether it is your teen, your parent, or your best friend. I will detail some great ideas to create free Christmas presents that the recipient will love and treasure.

Scrapbook/Photo Album

This is perfect for any family member on your list. Simply gather pictures that contain any special family moments that they hold dear and put them in the album. Add some creative text and decorations and you have a beautiful gift that will be treasured.

In this digital age you can also use a computer program such Windows Movie Maker to create videos with pictures and add appropriate music and save the creation on disk so they can watch the photo album/video anytime on the PC or DVD player.

Christmas Ornaments

Another great free Christmas present you can make is Christmas ornaments. Beautiful handmade ornaments can really add beauty to a tree and also create memories that can be shared for generations.

Scented Baked Ornaments

To make these ornaments, you will need:

4 cups flour

1 cup salt

1 cup water (or more as needed)

½ teaspoon Lorain candy oil (Cinnamon or peppermint are the best scent for Christmas)

Mix the flour and the salt. Make a hole in the center of the mixture and pour in the water add the candy oil at this time also. Mix thoroughly; adding more water if necessary (dough should be worked too smooth, not crumbly or sticky). Form the dough into balls and store them in plastic bags or containers to prevent drying out until needed.

Cover your surface with waxed paper and roll out a ball at a time to a half inch of thickness. Cut out the shapes. Using Christmas cookie cutters or any shape you desire. Use a toothpick to make a hole in the top of each ornament so you will be able to hang the ornament. You can use either a wire hanger or ribbon for hanging.

Bake the ornaments at 350 F for at least 45 minutes to 90 minutes or until a pin inserted in the dough comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the ornaments cool.

Use a small paint brush to paint details, or color with markers. Allow the paint to dry and brush on two coats of polyurethane for a protective finish. For wreath cut outs you can tape or paste a picture to the underside to add another personal touch.

Wooden Blocks

These make great gifts that you can create to fit anyone on your list. They are great for toddlers and younger children. Simply use piece of wood that you cut section off to make little blocks. Paint them decorative colors and write freehand or use stencils to make alphabet blocks or shapes. Kids will learn and also can use these blocks to build houses or castles or whatever their little imaginations decide. For the older ones you can tape pictures of things they are interested in on them. For teens you can use pictures of their friends or pictures from magazines of their idols. Use clear tape, such as packaging tape so the pictures will have a lamination over them to protect them for years to come. These are also great for parents and grandparents taping the pictures of the little ones on them. You can also paint letters to create a greeting such as "Welcome", "Happy Holidays", "Grandmas Kitchen" or whatever saying fits them.

Candy/Cookies

Nothing tastes better than homemade candies and cookies. Make up a batch of candy and or cookies or even brownies. You will give their taste buds a treat that they will love.

Candy/Cookie tins

Any old tin cans you have around the house can be created into works of art. Coffee Cans are perfect for decorating. You can paint them or glue felt and different items around these and personalize them for the person they are to go to. The candy and cookies you made above can be put into these decorated tins or if the coffee can is big enough you can even put the blocks you made into them. When the tin is empty the receiver can use them to put whatever they choose in them or just use them as decorative pieces. Let your imagination go wild as you create these beautiful tins.

With just items you have around the house and maybe a couple dollars you can create beautiful free Christmas present to be treasured and enjoyed for a long time to come or give the sweet tooth in the family a gift that will be sure take care of the sweet tooth.

These are good ideas; homemade Christmas presents are the best. It helps, though, to set a budget beforehand--even with ideas like these. If you're not careful, you can end up spending a lot of money on scrapbooking supplies, baking things, etc.
