Free Christmas Stocking Patterns for a Homemade Christmas

Moira Riley
For young and old alike knitting can be a wonderful way to pass the time. With the Christmas season coming what could be better than an authentic hand knit Christmas stocking? With so many people out there really wanting to make Christmas a traditional down home event, there are many places that you can go to find Christmas stocking knitting patterns. So, whether you are looking for a pattern for large stockings to hang on the hearth or small ones to decorate your trees/gifts this year my list will have some excellent choices for you.

There are so many free patterns that you can find on-line. I would really suggest taking the time to look at some of these that are readily available for your Christmas stocking project.

Stockings are really a more advanced skill so some of the patterns. This stocking is for advanced beginners that may be more appropriate if the other patterns look too difficult. This pattern also contains a link to a short rows tutorial which will introduce a novice knitter to the new skills needed to knit stockings.

For those who are more advanced knitters and are really looking for a variety to show off their advanced techniques I would suggest one of the free pattern sites like Knitting Pattern Central. This site has many different socking styles and also has some additional Christmas knitting patterns to enjoy for items such as tree skirts and ornaments.

There are some free knitting patterns that are easier to personalize than others. I would suggest this personalized pattern that gives you an open grid along with some suggestions for what you could do with it. This is also a very cute pattern for a personalized stocking and this pattern allows you to put someone name in the cuff.

One of my favorite free Christmas stocking knitting patterns is this set that comes with a pattern for a stocking, tree skirt, and blanket. This pattern would be great for a knitting group that would like to knit something for a charity raffle or auction.

Sometimes you can't find anything on a free pattern website. In the case there are some places where you can purchase some Christmas knitting patterns that you might enjoy.

Heartstings is currently offering a nice set of individual patterns that you can purchase rather than having to buy an entire book filled with some patterns you aren't interested in. I also found this great book from Knitting Daily that is devoted strictly to Christmas stockings.

Whether you are planning on finding a free pattern or purchasing a pattern for your hand knit Christmas stocking, it is sure to bring Christmas joy for years to come.
