Free Coloring Pages: Coloring Pictures for Pioneer Day, July 24

Cindy Lynn
Pioneer Days! The Days of '47! Wouldn't it be fun for the children to have printable coloring pages with pioneer themes for the Pioneer Day holiday on July 24?

The words "Pioneer Days" bring excitement to the hearts of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), especially those living in Utah and in LDS communities in Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, California, and elsewhere in the country. Even non-Mormons in those areas enjoy the festivities that commemorate the Mormon pioneers' trek across the plains and into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. This holiday is celebrated on July 24 each year, with Pioneer Day parades, speakers, fireworks and candy. For the kids, coloring pictures of pioneer activities on free, printable coloring pages just increases the fun all the more. But ... where can you go to find those free coloring pages? Just take a look at the list below.

About.com:Homeschooling
There are three separate pages about pioneer life available at this site, on pages 7-9, and they're printable PDF files. The coloring pictures include a covered wagon, pioneering chores, and churning butter. The images are fairly detailed, which can be fun for older children and for those who are capable of handling more intricate designs. The site also includes a pioneer word find, crossword puzzle, and other pioneer-related activities and crafts that your children can enjoy when they tire of coloring pictures.

The Prayer Quilt: A Pioneer Story and Coloring Book
This is a printable, pioneer story and coloring book, and the story is "derived from the journal entries of several real pioneer girls." It's a cute concept girls will love. The images include wagon trail scenes, a campfire scene, quilts, dolls, a pioneer girl, pioneer parents, and more, in a PDF file. The book has a total of 24 pages.

ABCTeach.com
This printable PDF file from ABCTeach.com contains five pages of fairly simple images that younger kids will enjoy. The images include two pioneer children playing hide and seek, a boy fishing, a girl churning butter, a boy and girl running, and a wagon being pulled by oxen.

A Year of FHE (blog)
This blog gives an index of LDS colouring pages. Scroll down to the word, "pioneer" for a listing that says, "Pioneer Children and Background Scene." Those two links take you to images from the LDS children's magazine, The Friend. The pictures are unique since they can be colored, cut out, and stood against the background scene, or used to act out a skit.

SuperColoring.com
The covered wagon image at this site is a simple design, but kids are sure to enjoy it even if they're a little older. Why? Because it has a fun looking horse-with a goofy expression-standing next to the covered wagon. It gave me a smile and I'm sure it'll give kids one, too.

Run off these free, printable coloring pages as a way to celebrate Pioneer Day with the children this July 24. They'll have a blast coloring pictures ... in between the parades, fireworks and picnics.
