Comic book lovers worldwide have an opportunity to receive free comic books on May 5, 2009. According to the Free Comic Book website, this annual event is 'administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry'. The annual event that began in 2002 features more than free comic books. Multiple sites will have celebrities of the comic book world present signing comic books and giving away other special items. A few of those scheduled to appear are Geoff Johns, Sterling Gates, Patrick Scherberger, Larry Welch, Vince DePorter, Mitch Breitwesiser, Jim Lee, Todd Nauck, Allen Martinez, Phillip Tan, and William Shatner. Also scheduled to appear are various comic book characters.

Another special feature of the day include freebies other than comic books. These items are an FCBD 2009 Minimate and a Magic the Gathering: Agents of Artifice Sampler.

The titles offered on Free Comic Book day include Avengers, Disney's Pixar Cars, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Mighty Archie Art Players, Transformers Animated/G.I. Joe, Aliens/Predator, Atomic Robot and Friends, Sonic the Hedgehog: Evolution of a Hero, William Shatner Presents #1 and Wolverine: Origin of an X Man.

An official website for Free Comic Book Day was established several years ago, and those interested in obtaining free comic books may utilize the site for more information including locating the stores nearest them that are participating in the event. There is also an option to subscribe to updates that goes beyond this year's event. Subscribers will be notified in advance of future Free Comic Book Days.

Though Free Comic Book Day is largely a North American event, multiple countries around the globe participate. Free Comic Book Day events are scheduled for the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bermuda, China, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, among many others.

Some participating vendor sites limit the amount of comic books patrons may take, while others operate on a more of a 'first come, first served' basis. It is recommended that free comic book seekers check out the rules for the various giveaway sites near them for the best giveaway offers. This information is linked to the vendor site information on the Free Comic Book website.

Fans of Free Comic Book Day may appear at the event in Free Comic Book Day garb, available for sale on the Free Comic Book Day website. The items include wristbands, hats, shirts and sweatshirts. Another option is to dress as their favorite comic book character.
