Free Condoms in San Francisco

Henry Swanson
San Francisco is a very sexually liberal and active city, boasting the world's largest annual LGBT Pride Parade and the famous Folsom Street Fair amongst other things. Naturally, there's a lot of sources of free condoms here, in order to help stem the tide of rampant "social diseases" that can come with such free and easy sexuality. It may be the modern Gomorrah and doomed to blaze in cleansing hellfire (why do Admah and Zeboim always get left out?), but until that happens, here's where to score free lubbers when the need arises.

The County Adult Assistance Program office, also colloquially known as the "welfare office" or "the GA check place", usually has a big fishbowl of free condoms sitting right out in front of you when you enter. You just have to go through some metal detectors, and check any bags or purses you may be carrying ... after that, however, they're all yours. And this is the one place where you don't have to worry about looking like a cheapskate for not making a donation. You can find it at 1235 Mission Street, not too far from 10th Street.

The San Francisco City Clinic is the city's source of sexual health care for low-income residents without insurance. Aside from being able to see a physician about your health issues, they also offer generous quantities of condoms, lubrication and morning-after pills. They do ask a $10 donation from clients who don't have insurance, but it's entirely optional. It's at 356 7th Street, between Cleveland and Harrison.

The Stop AIDS Project focuses on curtailing the spread of HIV in the communities of gay, bisexual and transgender men. Aside from free condoms they also offer HIV testing, counseling and a lot of information. They're at 2128 15th Street, between Noe and Sanchez.

The Women's Community Clinic at 2166 Hayes Street focuses on annual checkups for women without health coverage. They are offered for free, but you must get on a waiting list that generally takes 3 to 4 months to be seen. While waiting, you can load up on free condoms and sex lube to pass the time with. They survive off of volunteers and donations, so please consider both if you use their services.

Planned Parenthood Golden Gate offers many services for expectant mothers, but germane to this article are free condoms and morning-after pills. They also welcome donations of any amount. Find them at 815 Eddy Street, near Highway 101.

The Haight Ashbury Free Clinic is one of the city's longest-running and established clinics for those without other means of health care. Aside from a plethora of other health services, you can get free condoms and counseling on what birth control is right for you. They're at 558 Clayton, but be warned that severe state and city budget cuts have caused them to go through periods of a few months recently where they had to stop accepting any new clients, so it might be wise to call ahead.

If you're a student at San Francisco State University, some $200 of your annual tuition goes to supporting the Student Health Services clinic, so you might as well drop by to grab some of their free birth control pills, condoms and lube.

Finally, Rock Medicine is a non-profit group that has been covering big concerts since 1973, setting up a basic emergency aid station where one can get, among other things, free condoms. They are also always in need of volunteer help.
