The settlement is a result of a class action lawsuit against Federated Department Stores and will result in free makeup with a giveaway value of $175 Million. These free cosmetics products will be available on a first come first serve basis for a maximum of seven days. The free makeup will only be available at stores owned by the Retailer Defendants. The stores handing out free cosmetics products on Jan 20 are:
Bergdorf Goodman
Bergner's
Bloomingdale's
Boston Store
Carson Pirie Scott
Dillard's
Gottschalks
Herberger's
Macy's
Neiman Marcus
Nordstrom
Parisian
Saks Fifth Avenue
Younkers
In order to get free cosmetic products from the Retailer Defendants, customers must have bought Department Store Cosmetics during the period May 29, 1994 through July 16, 2003 from the list of products named on the Cosmetics settlement website. (http://cosmeticssettlement.com/) Customers who made purchases of one of these items during the specified time can claim one free cosmetics product on Tuesday, There are nine Manufacturer Defendants named on the settlement website. Each defendant's name provides the choices of free cosmetics which will be offered. If the store where a customer made the purchase has run out of the free cosmetics products, customers make choose one of the other stores on the list.
Customers will not be required to provide a receipt proving they purchased these cosmetic products but will have to sign a document stating they made a purchase during the specified time. The free cosmetics products given away on Free Makeup Tuesday are valued at $20 each. Not all stores will carry all free cosmetics as stores will only be giving away items they typically sold.
While the free makeup may seem like a good thing, patrons should remember this giveaway is a settlement reimbursing customers for previous overcharges. So while there is no catch to getting free cosmetics products on Free Makeup Tuesday, someone already paid the price.

Great detailed report! I got my freebies and wrote an article about the experience if you care to read the URL is http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1405523/free_makeup_cosmetics_on_jan_20th_2009.html?cat=49
Great info! I guess something is better than nothing, but this isn't much considering they were accused of price fixing on those expensive cosmetics.
