Take a Holiday Break and Visit Denver's Museums, Zoo and Gardens on Their Free Days!

What to do in Denver this November and December? Check out the free days! Thanks to the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), several popular Denver institutions have days in the next few months that are free to Colorado residents. Holiday free days vary, but you're likely to find something interesting to do as a break from the rush of the season. Don't forget that memberships are an affordable way to keep coming back, and a great gift idea.

The Denver Zoo is near City Park and is accessible by several buses including the 32 which stops out front. It's free on Sunday, November 4th, and Sunday, November 11th. With Bear Ridge, the first exhibit of its kind in North America when it opened long ago (renovated in 1987), Predator Ridge, an indoor rainforest and much more, it's a great place to visit year-round.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is free on Sunday, December 2. With a great view of the city, fascinating exhibits, and lectures which in November will include Nanotechnology and the Iraq Museum, as well as a newly upgraded planetarium, it is a great place to visit. The Titanic exhibit is still showing at the DMNS, and has authentic artifacts and educational displays that give insight into the voyage and the people of the great disaster.

Denver's famous Botanic Gardens, located on York street and accessible by the 24 bus, also in Littleton at Chatfield, is hosting its special holiday light display and is not free at the Denver location until January on Martin Luther King Day (Monday, January 21) and Presidents Day (Monday, February 18), and in Chatfield the upcoming free days are Fridays, November 2nd, December 7th, and January 4th. Visit their webpage for new video and podcast information about the gardens, their Holiday Sale on November 18th, and the Blossoms of Light display in December.

The Denver Art Museum is always open to Colorado residents on the first Saturday of each month, and November and December are no exception. The "Artisans & Kings" exhibit from the Louvre Museum in France is ongoing through January 6, and the Clyfford Still abstract expressionism exhibit is a unique experience.

The Denver Center for Performing Arts is offering free tickets to "The Diary of Anne Frank" on November 8th at 6:30PM, "Pride and Prejudice" on November 15th at 6:30PM, and "Our House" on January 10th, 2008 at 6:30PM. All are at the Space Theatre, and there are a few requirements: the tickets are available the day of the event at the box office only, starting two hours before the performance. The house opens a half hour before curtain time. There are no reservations, it's first come, first-served, and there is one ticket per person, with General Admission seating. No children under six, please. Enjoy!

The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden is free on Saturday, November 17th. They have a great bookstore, exhibits, and of course, the trains! It's also a perfect place to picnic for railroad fans.

While you're visiting, the museums are perfect for gift shopping as well. Check out the SCFD website for more information on free days in the new year!
