Cardboard
Permanent Marker
Measuring Tape
Large Plastic Bowl or Bucket that is round

DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 1: Begin by measuring the window that you will be making the roman shade for. You will need a piece of cardboard that is the same size as the window opening.
DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 2: Using the cardboard, cut a piece that is the width of the window that you have and about 3 feet long. This will be the pattern for your roman shade valance.
DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 3: Using a large plastic bowl or a bucket begin at the side of the cardboard piece on the bottom and lay the bowl along the edge with the bottom of the bowl laying along the bottom of the cardboard strip. Trace the bowl half way until you get to the center point.
DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 4: Now, lay the bowl next to that mark and trace the upper portion of the bowl. Continue staggering the bowl along the edge to create a scallop pattern along the lower portion of the cardboard strip.
DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 5: Cut the scalloped pattern so that you have a 2.5 foot long pattern that is the width of the window that you are making the free roman shade pattern for.
DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 6: Now, using the hole punch, begin punching holes in the cardboard roman shade pattern at the corners. You should punch one hole at each corner of the pattern to allot for pinning the pattern to the material that you will use for the shade in order to trace the pattern onto the material. You may also want to punch a hole in the side of the pattern to allow for easy pinning along the sides to hold the entire pattern in place.
DIY Roman Shade Pattern Step 7: To complete the free roman shade you can use any material to create the shade out of. For a sew free roman shade, simply use fabric glue to glue a hem into the material at the top that will glide through the window treatment brace.
