Free, Easy Crochet Pattern: Hooded Scarf

There are two things I look for in a crochet pattern- one is "free" and the other one is "easy". I found both in Marie Anne St. Jean's "Free Pattern - One Skein Scarf to Crochet". I liked the pattern so much that before I knew it, I had crocheted literally dozens of scarves from it.

The wind was whipping like crazy one cold November day, so I pulled my scarf I over my ears, and then it came to me: The only thing better than a warm scarf would be a warm scarf with a hood! I searched the Internet for a free, easy crochet pattern for a hooded scarf, but had no luck. I must have looked at my stack of scarves a million times before it occurred to me to add hoods to them. (Aha- necessity is the motherhood of invention.)

Free, Easy Crochet Pattern: Hooded Scarf

ch = chain
dc = double crochet

1. Begin by making a scarf following Marie Anne St Jean's "Free Pattern - One Skein Scarf to Crochet". Click here for the pattern. Note: You'll need an extra skein of yarn for the hood, so get two skeins. Finish scarf according to instructions.

2. Using the second skein of yarn, chain 59 for hood.

3. In 5th chain from the hook (2dc, ch1, 2dc) *skip 3 ch, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch*. Repeat from * ending with skip 1 ch, 1dc in last ch, turn. (It's the same pattern as Marie Anne's scarf.)

4. Ch 3, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in each ch 1 space across, ending with 1dc in top of turning chain.

5. Repeat step four 14 times or until desired size. Finish off ends.

6. Fold hood in half, making sure the starting chain stitches are aligned. (You'll see how this is a hood shape.)

7. Slip stitch together, starting at the bottom (where the corners are) and working toward the fold. Skip the very last chain so the hood doesn't get pointy. Turn hood right-side out, so the slip stitches are on the inside.

8. Fold scarf in half the long way and mark center point. Align the center point of the scarf with the seam of the hood. Secure bottom of hood to top of scarf using safety pins or clothes pins.

9. Slip stitch hood to edge of scarf (on the same side as the slip stitches of the hood). Finish off ends.
