Free Educational Online Games for Kids

Alicia Bodine
Kid's love to be online so why not find some sites that will reinforce their current education. Here are a few to get you started:

1. FunBrain-I first learned of this site through my sister. Her daughter's second grade teacher recommended that all the children in his class play Math games on FunBrain. You can search games for your child by selecting a grade level (K-8) or by selecting a subject. Classic FunBrain games include: Math Baseball, The Plural Girls, Proton Don, Grammar Gorillas, and Math Car Racing. There are plenty more links to stimulate your child's brain in a fun way. If you are a teacher or a home schooling mom like me, they have a teacher section as well. You can easily search for a game that coincides with your student's homework.

2. Kaboose-While Kaboose has games for elementary age children, it is primarily geared toward the education of preschoolers. Preschoolers can learn without even realizing it through Kaboose's fun online games and easy-to-print coloring pages. Help your children find the pterodactyl eggs before time runs out in DINO Soars! Play a game of soccer or two with Soccer Smash. Not interested in either of them? Check out Kaboose's top 10 list of their most popular games. This site did take a little while to load, but is worth it if you have a child under the age of six.

3. Primary games has games for almost every subject an elementary student would have. You can easily choose a subject from the list at the top of the website. I have looked at a lot of educational sites and most leave out Social Studies. I was glad to find it here on Primary games. There is a section for seasonal games and activities as well as a teachers curriculum guide. Click on that curriculum guide and you will find out which games compliment your child's current studies. This site gets 5 stars from me.

4. Prongo is unique in its approach to educational games in that its games are interactive. Games are available for the following age categories: 3-6 years, 6-9 years, and 9-12 years. Prongo also has a few games that are 2 players so your child can play with his or her friends. I have found a lot of original material on this site. You can play a stock market game with real stock quotes. There are quiz games on such things as the human body, outer space, the United States, and the Earth. This site is definitely worth your time!

5. I Know That.com-This site's motto is "Learning skills for life". You can find a game by grade level (preschool through 6th grade). Grades are listed across the top of the site. You may also choose your game by subject. Subjects are listed down the left-hand side of the site. I love that this site lists several events that occurred today from years past. This site is not as colorful as the other sites, but it is easy to navigate. It also has a category for thinking games if you want to work on keeping your child's brain sharp.

The above 5 sites should provide everything you need to keep your child from falling behind in school. There should also be enough games to choose from for you to reinforce your child's homework assignments. Congratulations for taking part in your child's education.

I am a single stay at home mom of 2 girls. My youngest has Angelman Syndrome so I had to learn how to work from home. I enjoy writing and using the programs on my blog http://paidtowrite.blogspot.com. Fee...  View profile
