Free Fabric Apron Pattern: An Apron Making Tutorial

Ann Siper
This fabric apron tutorial is an easy way to create your own fabric apron pattern. You can make your own fabric apron patterns and sell them on Etsy or any online craft store. You can also use your free fabric apron tutorial to make aprons as gifts and for your own use.

To Make Your Free Fabric Apron Pattern You Will Need:

Fabric

Ruler

Sewing Machine

Ribbon (optional)

Premade existing apron (optional)

Now, you can make your own aprons or even copy a favorite apron pattern to create some fun and unique retro aprons to sell.

I like to take an existing regular old apron and trace it out on some large sheet of paper - like newsprint. This way you get a good pattern or image to embellish. You can use your pencil and add scallops to the top, like a sweetheart neckline, which was very popular on retro 1950's and 1940's aprons.

Another fun look is to add scallops at the bottom. You can also round edges, create a belt and more.

To make a belt for your retro apron simply draw it into the pattern you traced onto your paper. Cut each piece out. Now, trace onto your fabric using fabric chalk. You will want to draw each piece 5/8s of an inch larger so that when hemmed and sewn together they are the same size as the original.

Now, if you want to make your own retro apron from scratch simply lay out that large sheet of paper again. Draw out a rectangle that is about 2 feet wide and 3.5 feet tall. This will be the main body of the apron.

You can play around adding the details described above. You will want to cut out the paper apron and try it on for size. See how the cuts fit and how the scalloped and detailed edges look.

You can use grosgrain ribbon to add the strap on the neck or even the ties on the waist.

Tips: Finally, make yoru retro apron pattern out of an inexpensive fabric, like recycled bed sheets or muslin and see how they work. When sewing them use the basting setting on your sewing machine. This will sew the pieces together with a large stitch.

A large stitch will allow you to take apart your retro apron pattern and adjust any small details needed. Once any detail have been adjusted you can create fun retro apron patterns out of great new fabric or treasured vintage fabric you have come across.

Ohhhh, I love this idea. What fun this craft would be and great for gift giving. I think vintage dresses that are a bit worn at the seams but otherwise ok would cut up and work fine for making an apron.
