Free Garden Planters You Didn't Know You Had

Ann Siper
Gardening is one of those hobbies that can really put a strain on the old wallet. Use materials around the house to make free garden planters is a great way to garden on a budget!

We all have free garden planters we didn't even know we had. I hope I can give you enough ideas fro free garden planters, so that everyone has at least one of these.

Free Garden Planter #1

Plastic buckets make great free garden planters. Yes, they may be boring to look at, but that is easily changed as well. Spray on a coat of exterior grade primer. Now, paint on a coat of outdoor paint or exterior house paint. Let this dry. Use a drill bit to drill about four holes in the bottom of our 5 gallon bucket.

Place a 1 - 2 inch layer of rocks on the bottom and top of with top soil. Now, add your plants!

Old metal buckets also work great for this. If you want a more rustic or vintage look, then metal buckets are the way to go. These metal garden containers can rust away and add a charm of time gone by to any garden in need of a causal touch.

Free Garden Planter #2

Almost everyone I know has a wheel barrel. Old wheel barrels make the greatest garden planters. All you need to do is drill a few holes in the bottom of the thing. If you wheel barrel is rusted out on the bottom, then this may not make the best free garden planter.

You can also stand your wheel barrel on the end to make it stand upright and planting climbing plants below it. A free make shift garden trellis with a fun touch!

Free Garden Planter #3

Plastic bowls also make great free garden planters. If you always send up with a ton of plastic bowls and plates that are meant to be used out on the patio, then use some of the bowls to create free coordinating garden pots.

Smaller bowls will only need one hole drilled in the bottom. Larger bowls will need two. Almost any metal drill bit can cut through plastic.

You can also use the juice pitcher or water pitcher as a garden container. This is a great way to create taller flower pots with a little variety.

In this same thread of an idea, plastic cups and mugs will also work well. If you have an old table or display area in you r garden you could make a whole dinner set of plastic table where in to planters and set a fun and whimsical dinner table in your garden! This free flower pot idea is very Alice in Wonderland!
