Free Granny Square Pattern: Circle in the Square

Circle in the Square Free 6" Crochet Granny Square Pattern

Marie Anne St. Jean
I've seen granny square crochet patterns that looked like a circle in a square, but after spending considerable time looking and not finding what I wanted, I decided to try to work up my own pattern.

A simple pattern that starts off with a circle and ends with a square, the piece will measure 6" when a single crochet border is added. I think this granny square looks best worked in two contrasting colors.

Pattern Difficulty = Easy

Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
HDC = half double crochet
St = stitch

This pattern is provided free and may not be sold. You may sell the items you make from the pattern, but you may not sell the pattern. Feel free to share this pattern on your site or blog, but please link to this page - do not post the pattern itself.

Using size I crochet hook and worsted weight yarn will result in a 6" granny square

With Color A, ch 5, join with slip stitch to first ch

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first HDC at beginning of rounds 1-3), work 17 more HDC in the circle for a total of 18 HDC, join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 2/HDC

Round 2: Ch 2, work 1 HDC in each stitch around, for a total of 18 HDC, join with slip stitch to top of beginning ch 2/HDC

Round 3: Ch 2, 1 HDC in same space, work 2 HDC in each stitch around, total of 36 HDC. Join with slip stitch to top of first ch 2/HDC. Finish off.

Round 4: Join Color B in any stitch. Ch 3 (counts as first DC at beginning of rounds 4-5), DC in same space, * DC in next st, HDC in next 2 st, SC in next 2 st, HDC in next 2 st, DC in next st, 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC in next st (making corner), repeat from * to complete other 3 sides, ending with 2 DC in beginning corner, ch 2, sl stitch to join to beginning ch 2/DC.

Round 5: Ch 3, DC in same space, *DC in next 10 stitches, sk last DC, work 2 DC, ch 2, 2DC in corner, repeat from * to complete other 3 sides, ending with 2 DC in last corner, ch 2, sl st to top of first ch 3/DC. Finish off.

Border: Join Color A in any stitch. Ch 1, SC around all four sides, working (SC, ch 2, SC) in each corner. Slip stitch to join to initial ch. Finish off.

This free 6" granny square pattern would make a lovely baby blanket or afghan, and if using cotton yarn, would be suitable for a hot pad or potholder in the kitchen too.

    This is a very nice pattern. Love the white and turquoise together, too.

    Thank you so much for such easy directions to a great square. I'm using a medium grey, dark teal and a burnt orange to make a great fall blanket.

    Crocheting was a skill among women in my family for generations. I'm glad to see that it is still alive.
