Free Grants for Low Income Families

J. Matthison
Everyone struggles, especially low-income families. But with grants, there is a source for help. From helping with living expenses to paying for a funeral of a loved one, grants offer a resource that can help turn the lives around of those that receive them.

What is a Grant?

A grant is money that is given to individuals such as low income families to help during hard times. The money does not have to be paid back.

Grants for Financial Help

The Washington Group Foundation provides low-income families money to prevent homelessness, help build self-sufficiency and expand their education. Grants are provided on a national basis.

Grants for Basic Living, Medical and Funeral Expenses

St. Benedict's Charitable Society offers financial assistance to low-income families for basic living expenses as well as medical and funeral expenses.

Grants for Child Care

United Way of America provides day care for children of low income families. The rate paid by the family is based on their income. Some families qualify for free child care.

Grants for Food Assistance

The Food and Nutrition Service division of the USDA offers a program called The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) that provides food and nutritional assistance for low-income families. The program provides food to local agencies such as food banks, who distribute the products to those that qualify for assistance.

On monday december 27 my fiancee and i came home from the grocery store to discover our sons live in girlfrien of 4 years had committed suicide in front of him. Our driveway was covered with police and medical personnel. Her body was taken away and sent to Chapel Hill for and autopsy which was completed and her body was to be picked up by a funeral home in Greer SC and a service was to be planned. The problem is there was no insurance due to her being unemployed and unless half of her funeral is paid for by sunday her funeral will be postponed until it can be paid for. She leaves behind a six year old daughter whos father died in an auto accident when she was only two weeks old so she has no one parents. The funeral cost 8000.00 dollars and we are having to try to raise the money to give her a decent burial. If anyone out there can help us in any way we would be eternally grateful. Thank you for your time and for letting me tell this sad story. It will take a long time for our son and

Hi there, my main concern is our financial situation. I'm a single mom w/ 3 young daughters all in school. Last Dec. I was laid off from a great job & have been on unemployment since. We live in a very small town. My unemployment is only a bit over 200.00 a week & just our rent is 800.00 per mo. I tried to return to school bc of no jobs & was told I'd lose my only sourse of income. I can't get food stamps as they said it's called unearned income so I don't qualify nor do I qualify for any medical yet my kids do & I have a medical condition that requires a monthly visit. My kids have a dead beat dad that owes over 80K & has never paid. We are losing our rental home, we never have food, I feed my kids b4 myself & I'm 5"7 & down to 101lbs. How can I get help or where do my 3 kids & 2 little dogs go when we lose our home? I want more than anything to return to school but how is that fair if I'm doing something to better my family & our future we lose wha
