The metal plated helms are just one style of this head gear worn on males who went into battle in medieval times many of us may also know as the renaissance era.
Where can helms be seen locally?
There are several kinds of festivals in Kansas that represent medieval times. Kansas is not the only state to hold these types of renaissance activities. Not only that, many like to make their own costumes for Halloween.
There are those who also belong to reenactment groups. They often make their own costumes. These costumes will include various types of helms like the metal style found in this article.
Not only that, there are schools across the country who have their own renaissance activities. These can include fairs and plays.
Movies helms are seen in.
"Troy" is one movie that has a renaissance flair to it with actors wearing helms in some of the battle scenes.
"The 300 Spartans" is another movie that lends itself to medieval times.
These are just two of dozens of movies that have been made with medieval garb.
Making your own metal helm.
Below are two patterns for a great helm. In some cases, one of these helms often looks like a steel bucket turned upside down on a man's head. There are more sophisticated types too. The second helm pattern is one of the more "uptown" styles.
Greathelm by Alan Bauldre
Alan Bauldree has created a pattern for a helm for those who are looking to make their own for a medieval costume. There are four pattern pieces to be printed.
There are directions on each of the pattern plates for laying them on the sheet metal for cutting. All pieces are marked for their positioning for the helm.
The only piece for the helm that is not given is the top circular piece. There is information on the pattern plate number one for making the top piece. I also did not see a pattern piece for the "nose plate" for the front of the helm.
This Greathelm pattern has all the pieces shown in the pictures in the above link. You will notice the difference in how the pattern pieces are laid out in set of patterns.
Greathelm by Sinric
Sinric's Greathelm is a slightly different version of the first helm and its pattern. There are a few simple instructions for making this one. He also provides tips on how he polishes his helm.
