There are many inexpensive, or free things to do in San Jose with the family. San Jose is well known to locals for having some of the best entertainment, parks and festivals in the county, offering a day of enjoyment without spending a fortune. As a San Jose family, you have already discovered places like Happy Hollow Park, The Tech Museum, The Children's Museum, Christmas in the Park, and Vasona.

Now that the children are on winter break, all of these places offer a great day of entertainment that is budget friendly for family days out. Sometimes the weather around here means being outside isn't possible, however.

If the day turns cold and rainy and everyone is anxious to do something, but money is tight, here is one of the best ways to spend the day that is creative, fun, and gets the entire family out of the house.

Hold a photo scavenger hunt for a free family day out--
The rules are very simple. Divide your family into teams of two or more. Drive to one of the local San Jose Malls or other public place. Once you are there, each team will spend one hour walking around snapping photos of stationary items using a digital camera or cell phone. Take about 50 pictures. At the end of one hour, everyone needs to rendezvous at a predesignated area.

Now have your teams swap cameras. The pictures on the camera are the items you need to find in the scavenger hunt. As your team goes about searching for an item, when one is found, take a picture using the same camera or cell phone. No other camera or cell phone should be used (to prevent teams from splitting up).

Set a time limit of an hour or more, depending on how many items you need to find. The team that finds the most items within the time frame wins. You can offer prizes if you like.

If you want to plan this activity in advance, designate team captains who will go out ahead of time and snap pictures. Then you have the opportunity to print out the items and distribute for the teams to find and take photos.

This is a great way to spend a day out with your family in San Jose. It is free, fun, and gets the entire family involved with each other.
