Free Tourist Attractions You Can Tour When Vacationing in Indianapolis

The city of Indianapolis is the capitol of the state of Indiana. It is a large city, the 14th largest in the United States in fact, and has a population of nearly 800,000 people. If you are visiting this city to tour the local colleges and universities, for business or to attend a convention or professional sporting event then you will want to learn about the free attractions that this city has to offer. Use these free attractions to fill out your visit to Indianapolis without cutting into your travel budget.

Indiana State Capital Tour

One of the most popular free attractions offered by Indianapolis is the Indiana State Capital Tour. This tour is offered Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m, Saturdays at 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., and on Sundays at 11:15 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Handicapped parking is available on Government Center Drive, Ohio Street and on Senate Avenue. There are two entries that you can use, however, the closest to the tour information room will be the lower level West doors. The most popular time to take this tour is during the Spring, this is when many school children visit the capitol. Keep this in mind when planning your visit.

Capitol Commons

After your tour of the Indiana State Capitol spend some time at the Capitol Commons. They are found on Capitol Avenue directly in front of the Westin Hotel. This English style garden is the perfect place to have a picnic, or just enjoy a few moments in the presence of nature.

Scottish Rite Cathedral

The Scottish Rite Cathedral, which is located at 650 N. Meridian Street, is an interesting stop if you enjoy architecture or glass art. This building is the headquarters for the Scottish Rite Fraternity, which is a branch of the Masonic Fraternity. Free guided tours are offered to visitors.

Crown Hill Cemetery

One of the most intriguing free attractions in Indianapolis is the Crown Hill Cemetery. It is located at W. 38th Street and offers 555 acres of historical burials. Within this cemetery are 185,000 graves, many of which are for famous and infamous people like President Harrison, James Whitcom Riley, Colonel Eli Lilly, John Dillinger and 13 Generals from the Civil War. You can tour this cemetery on foot on in your car, as there are 25 miles of paves roads that weave their way through the cemetery's grounds.

National Art Museum of Sport

The National Art Museum of Sport is a unique free attraction that you won't want to miss. This attraction is located at 850 W. Michigan Street. It is the home to a unique collection of artwork that feature sport or athlete themes. This museum is operated by the Indiana University - Purdue University, so it makes a great stop if you are visiting local campuses.
