FREE INSIDE

Kathryn Neff Perry
When he was little, my son used to pick out the kind of cereal he wanted by what was offered inside. Before he could read he enlisted the help of his sister. The two of them used to stand at the cereal aisle for a long time trying to decide which box had the best offer inside.
I always told them, "Now when we get home I don't want you digging around in the cereal box for the prize."
They always assured me they would eat every last morsel in the box, that not an ounce of cereal would be wasted. While I was struggling with bags of groceries, just lugging them from the car to the house, those little angels already had the cereal boxes open.
My son would usually dump the cereal into large mixing bowls until he found his prize, which was never on the top, but always at the very bottom of the box. He would usually play with the little car, truck, airplane or whatever happened to be in the box that week, and the entire box of cereal would still be sitting in the mixing bowls.
When I remember I try to dump it back in the cereal box so it won't get stale. Most of the time I would forget, the cereal would go stale, and my son would not eat it.
I thought those days were gone forever, and that I would have to wait until I had grandchildren to deal with someone going through the boxes again. For the past several months my son has been feeding the cat, without any prompting from me.
I thought it was unusual, but I didn't say anything. The cat loved being fed two or three times a day. The other day I realized why he has been feeding her.
The brand of cat food I buy has an advertisement on the outside of the bag, "Free inside, collectible coin."
