An interactive whiteboard is an interactive display that is hooked up to a computer and projector. They are used in many schools as a replacement for the traditional blackboard or whiteboard. This educational tool is often referred to by brand names such as ActivBoard, Smart Board, and eBeam. Whiteboard games offer an engaging learning experience that also supports various learning styles. Some games are specific to a type of whiteboard brand, but these can be used with most whiteboards.
Free Online Whiteboard Games
The web is a great resource to find free whiteboard games and applications that do not require pricey software. Be sure to check out sites such as Scholastic, PBS Kids and Internet4Classrooms for free math, science, social science, language arts games. You can find an assortment of games for grades Pre-K through 12. The SMART Exchange lets you download games for free and they also have video tutorials on YouTube.
Whiteboard Blogs
You can also search for blogs and free whiteboard games created by other educators. You can usually download PowerPoint, flash and java games for free. The Whiteboard Blog has a great list of interactive Whiteboard resources and games. Their list includes sites such as Math Playground, which has plenty of math games for middle school students. Whiteboard blogs are a valuable resource and save you time since bloggers scour the web for whiteboard games for you.
Whiteboard Games for ESL Students
Interactive whiteboard games really help engage ESL students in between lessons. ESL Games World has a variety of memory games, customizable game templates and also printable games. Their listening memory games and picture labeling games really come in handy for classroom practice. Busy Teacher and Mrs. Hurley's ESL have lists of creative ESL games to teach numbers and vocabulary. The interactive dictionaries and matching games are some of my favorites. Digital Dialects also has numbers, food, clothing, animal and color games with audio.
Interactive Whiteboard Jeopardy Games
Some educators like using PowerPoint presentations for whiteboard Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune style games, but JeopardyLabs has a free online Jeopardy template that allows you to create your own custom whiteboard games. This is a great resource for teachers who don't have access to PowerPoint or find it difficult to use. The JeopardyLabs template is pretty easy to use and the site has a simple test generator. You can also brose other Jeopardy templates that other uses created if you need some ideas.
