Kansas is a great state to visit if you have a small vacation budget. This state is overflowing with free tourist attractions. These attractions range from local historical museums to memorial monuments to parks and zoos. Enjoy what this state offers you with their compliments!

Free Arkansas City Attractions

There are at least two free attractions offered by the Kansas city of Arkansas City. The first is the River Valley Art Festival. This art festival is an annual event that is held each year in June at Wilson Park. At this event you will be able to view local artwork, participate in special events and sample local foods and beverages.

The Chaplin Nature Center is the second free attraction found in Arkansas City, Kansas. This nature center is found at 27814 27th Drive. Its hours of operation vary by the time of year you visit so check out their website for times before your visit. Between November 16 and March 15 the center is closed during the weekdays. However, between March 16 and June 30 they are open Tuesday through Friday from 9-5, between July 1 and August 30 they are open Tuesday through Friday from 10-2 and between September 1 and November 15 they are open Tuesday through Friday from 9-5. In addition to the weekday hours the center is always open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The center is closed on major holidays.

Peter Pan Park

Peter Pan Park is the crown jewel of Emporia, Kansas. This 51.7 acre park is open to the public. It has a four acre lake, wading pools, playground equipment, a horseshoe pit, tennis courts, a covered picnic area, an amphitheater and ball fields. This park is also the home to several special statues, memorials and monuments. This makes a great place for a vacation picnic or as the location of a family reunion or wedding celebration.

High Plains Museum

If you are interested in the history of the high plains then you will want to visit the High Plains Museum. It can be found at the intersection of 17th Street and Cherry Street in Goodland, Kansas. Founded in 1959 this museum has an interesting collection of artifacts, artwork and relics. The normal hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9-5 and Saturday from 9-4. However, hours of operation do change seasonally and generally expand between May and September. Check out their website for this season's hours of operation.

Buffalo Solider Memorial

The Buffalo Solider Memorial is an interesting stop if you enjoy military history. This memorial consists of a memorial wall carved out of limestone and a bronze sculpture of a buffalo solider standing stoically next to his horse. This memorial is dedicated to the 9th and 10th Horse Cavalries who were known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
