Free Land Available - The Catch is It's in Kansas

Need to find an affordable place to live? Would you be surprised to learn that there are still places giving away land to individuals? Curious what the catch is? Here are your answers!

Kansas has multiple communities suffering from declining populations. These communities want to stay on the map, so they are actually giving land away to people willing to move and stay there for a certain length of time. Sounds inviting, doesn't it? Want to find out more? Keep reading!

Rural areas of Kansas have shrinking populations. People with children of school age often move away to more urban areas. Many of these communities are facing lack of tax revenue and lowered enrollment in their schools. The free land came as an idea to prevent their communities from drying up and blowing away in the Kansas wind.

Which communities in Kansas are giving away land? Most of these communities are located in central Kansas. These include: Tescott, Ellsworth, Hollyrood, Marquette, Wilson and Lincoln. At least one community in northwest Kansas (Atwood) and one in southeast Kansas (Chetopa) are also giving land with a few towns scattered elsewhere in Kansas (Plainville, Stockton, Mankato.)

So, what is the catch? Free land does not mean a free home. In order to receive the free land, one must sign a contract that they will build a home of certain specifications on the land and move in within an agreed upon time. Some cities will waive the cost of having utilities connected, others don't. Most cities connect you with builders to assist you with the completion of a home.

A website: http://www.kansasfreeland.com has details of each town's requirements. Read through the websites, think about your options. Perhaps rural living is for you. Enjoy a laid back lifestyle, lower cost of living and good quality schools. Visit some of the communities and you might just want to stay.
