Free and Low Cost Ways to Make the Christmas Season Fun for Kids

Maggie Blake
As the economy continues to wane, and families all across America continue to struggle financially, many are wondering how to handle the upcoming Christmas season. Parents want to provide a fun Christmas holiday season for their kids, but many also have to deal with more budget limitations this year. If you need ideas for great, cheap ways to enjoy the Christmas season with your kids, the following tips may help you!

Fill the season with as many free or low cost Christmas themed activities as you can - Since many parents are scaling back on Christmas this year (and possibly years to come), you can increase your holiday fun by adding lots of free or low cost activities as you can make time for. For instance, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, enjoy free activities with your kids such as coloring Christmas coloring pages that you've found online and printed at home, making a paper chain to count down the days to Christmas, and reading Christmas stories. You can find countless Christmas books at your local library, and check them out for free. Additionally, find out about free Christmas functions at local churches or community centers that you and your kids can participate in. There are also countless low cost Christmas craft activities that you can find directions for online and complete with your kids at home. Add some hot chocolate and Christmas music, and you're making Christmas memories that your kids will never forget.

Have several Christmas "movie nights" during the holiday season - Let's face it, some of our best childhood memories of Christmas are connected to special Christmas movies and programs that we watched. You likely already own several Christmas movies; some geared towards children specifically, and others intended for more general audiences. Look through your collection and plan some movie nights, complete with popcorn and maybe even some inexpensive candy canes that you can pick up at the grocery store beforehand. If there's a special Christmas movie or program that you'd like to make a movie night out of but you don't own it, pick it up at the video rental store. It most likely will not be a new release, and older titles can usually be rented for about a $1 per week.

Do some Christmas baking with your kids - Personally, my best Christmas memories from childhood have nothing at all to do with gifts. My best Christmas memories are of painting Christmas tree ornaments, and decorating Christmas cookies with my three older siblings. Baking is such a great way to share the holiday season with your kids, and depending on what you decide to bake, you can pick up your ingredients fairly inexpensively. In fact, you probably already have most of them in your kitchen. Again, put on some Christmas music, look up some recipes online, and have a great day with your kids.

When you take the time and effort to stretch out the Christmas season with free or low cost activities, your kids will likely hardly notice that there are a few less presents under the tree this year, or that the gifts were not necessarily expensive ones. Once they are adults, they are hardly going to remember any of their childhood Christmas gifts, anyway. But they'll always remember happy holiday time spent with their family doing simple, but fun Christmas activities. You'll be creating wonderful memories that your children will associate with Christmas for the rest of their lives. And that's way better than an Xbox.
