Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday. Banks and government offices, as well as schools are typically closed on federal holidays. Employers are not required to observe the holiday and many businesses and stores will be open.

Although President Ronald Reagan signed Martin Luther King Day into law for the holiday to be observed, he was reluctant to do so and threatened to veto the action. Most remember that Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. However, the law was not signed until 1983, and was first observed in 1986. Others, including John McCain, were opposed to this holiday. Use this link to learn more.
