Free MMOFPS and MMOTPS Games You Should Play

A Brief List of Free Online Games That's Actually Worth Your Time

William Usher
There's a hefty selection of action-oriented massive multiplayer online titles out there, but not all of them are worth your time. Games worth avoiding unless you have dead-eye aim are A.V.A (Alliance of Valiant Arms) or the interesting but ultimately unpolished Sudden Attack. The free massive multiplayer online first-person shooter and third-person shooter games you should check out and play are below - not only because they're free but because they're fun, too.

BattleSwarm: Field of Honor
Reality Gap scored a homerun when it came to gameplay and originality. BattleSwarm features several gaming genres in one kick-butt MMO platform. Players can choose (before any match) to play on the human side or the bug side. On the human side the game is a third-person action shooter that sees gamers fending off hordes off enemy bugs trying to overrun the human base. For humans there are various guns, explosives and skills available to fry, blow up and shred the bugs. When playing as a bug commander the game radically changes into a real-time strategy game featuring several hives that players can use to build an army of various bug types to launch an attack. It's an amazingly polished game with PvP and PvE modes, leveling, stat tracking, leaderboards, crafting and a robust player-motivated shopping option for acquiring rare and unique items.

S4 League
This hyper-stylish MMOTPS relies very heavily on over-the-top everything to help distinguish it from the rest of the herd. S4 literally stands for: Stylish, eSper, Sports and Shooting. The "eSper" relates to the virtual reality skills players can use against their opponents during a bout, including laser shields, invisibility, blockades or even health and SP boosts. There are several different weapons available in the game that look nothing like their real-life counterparts - which makes the experience that much more original - and one of the real highlights of the game lies in the multiple clothing options and various stat enhancements that allow players to customize their look and abilities. This is one of the few MMOTPS games out there where having a player "clone" is a rarity.

Gunz: The Duel
This is an old-school shooter that definitely shouldn't be missed. It receives regular updates thanks to its ijji Games distributor and is all about stylish gunplay. Unlike S4 League, though, Gunz is more about gameplay-style than character-style; players can run on walls, hop off pillars, dual-wield just about any single-handed weapon and perform a number of complex maneuvers using swords and guns. Even though the graphics aren't all that great, the game itself is very fluent and easy to pick up and play. The quest mode and "duel" mode also add a whole new layer of complexity to the game that enriches the online experience with other players. Toss in the fact that Gunz has one of the best weapon caches for an online shooter game and you have yourself some MMOTPS gold.

Parabellum
Acony's not-so-talked-about but highly anticipated MMOFPS is nearing open-beta. Nevertheless, gamers can start playing by applying to take part in the closed-beta. This game is a huge step forward in the MMOFPS genre given its new-found take on destructible environments, progressive and persistent character development and a brand new weapon customization and modding tool that allows players to change just about every necessary aspect of their gun. This shooter will also come equipped with a revolutionary campaign mode and RPG-like leveling for characters and weapons. Add in the fact that Parabellum is running on the Unreal Engine and sports dynamic physics-based combat and you have yourself one of the coolest, modern-military MMOFPS games out there.

Huxley
This is the second ijji game to make this list but with good reason: believe it or not this game is actually free-to-play. It's a shocking thing to know but it's true. Running on the cash-shop model that has made billions of dollars within the MMO market, Huxley is one of the first big-budget MMOFPS games to incorporate large-scale, vehicle-based battles and still maintain a free-to-play platform. The game mixes in Final Fantasy-esque aesthetics with Unreal Tournament's frantic action. For those of you who think that this game may be far off from release or is still off limits to the public, think again. Closed beta testing recently ended, but it was open (and free) for public access. The next step for this game is a full-fledged open-beta program, which will be launching soon.
