Free Online Games for Kids (and the Young at Heart)

Amber S.
Looking for something fun and free to do online? Here are some great games for the young and the young at heart. Heck, I've even played a few of these myself :)

Orisinal: Morning Sunshine - Lots of really amazing and beautifully artistic games of skill for young and old! (a personal favorite)

RuneScape - A large and very beautifully made free MMO game that is child-friendly. The game requires a lot of reading and typing which can be helpful in teaching children who are learning to become better readers. I've personally tested this one and give it five stars!

Horseland - A game about breeding, showing, and caring for horses and dogs. While the game is most popular with girls and women, it is boy-friendly and many boys play as well. Players get to own their own horses, care for the horses, and play various horse-themed games. Parts of the game involve various levels of math in dealing with points as well as game dollars. I have also personally tested this game. I began playing many years ago when it was still very new, but the game is so popular now that a Horseland cartoon was started.

Starfall - Not so much as a game as a flash based website with lots of fun and interactive reading activities. My toddler and I love doing the ABCs and later when she is older, we will move on to the beginning reading activities.

PBS Kids Games - lots of educational games for kids based on the PBS shows

Free Rice - Older kids (and especially adults) may find this simple vocabulary game very addicting. For each correct answer you get, the website donates free rice to the hungry all over the world. You can also set the game to different subjects if vocabulary isn't your dig. Choose from subjects such as geography, foreign language, art, chemistry, and math as well. (paid for by advertisers)

Free Poverty - Same premise as Free Rice, but the organization donates cups of clean water instead. Brush up on your world geography while helping others around the globe!

Charitii - Same premise as the above two games, but you play word games to donate to your favorite charity - you get to choose!

And if none of those fit your fancy, try Kids 4 Kids with lots of different online games.

I already know of RuneScape and FreeRice, but I hadn't heard of these others. Thanks for writing about them. :)

This is great! I am going to recommend your article to my ESL students. These sound like good, educational games! :)
