Free Online Spades Games

Rhonda Oneslager
Many of us have fond memories of sitting around the dining room table with family and friends playing an exciting game of cards. This experience has been brought to one's personal computer in the form of free card games on-line. One of my all time favorite card games is Spades. Cyber space has brought a plethora of free on-line Spades games for one to enjoy. Just register, set up an account, and a fun game of Spades is just a mouse click away.

Gamesville boasts the motto "Wasting your time since 1996". This site keeps players coming back by offering GV rewards. Registered members can exchange the free GV rewards they accrue by playing for chances to win cash. Presently they are having drawings for $200 and $1000. Other free on-line Spades games can be played at MSN, NabiscoWorld, CyberSpades, and ZooGames. There are a multitude of free sites to play Spades on-line however the two most popular are Yahoo and Hardwood Spades.

Out of all the free Spades sites Hardwood Spades, in my opinion, has the best graphics. One can choose from 31 Medieval theme player characters such as a knight, king, queen, or joker. You can also customize your icon so that your player character is unique and different. Not only can one choose from a vast array of player icons but you can also pick from 4 card decks with 24 card designs in all.

Hardwood Spades stimulates one's auditory faculties as well. While partaking in a game of Spades Medieval theme music is played in the background. Another feature allows you to throw kisses or a raspberry at your opponent or partner to let them know exactly how you feel. These sound effects are fun and amusing but can be somewhat distracting to the serious Spades player.

Hardwood Spades usually has over 1,000 players on their site at any given moment. They also sponsor over 100 tournaments a day. In-game tutorials are also offered for those who do not know how to play Spades or just need a refresher course.

Although pleasing to the eye and ear Hardwood Spades has a few pit-falls in the gaming experience. As stated previously the auditory and visual effects have a tendency to be distracting. Those who are wanting to play a competitive game of Spades might be put off with all these "extras". It is not uncommon for one's opponents or partner to leave the game unexpectedly. It is then necessary to have another individual take their place in order for the game to continue. This either takes awhile because rarely does someone want to play a game that was started by someone else, or the game is forfeited altogether. Nothing is more annoying than having wasted a good half hour or more with no resolution, win or lose, when starting a game of Spades.

Hardwood Spades is played at a slower pace then most on-line Spades sites. First, unlike other gaming areas, extra seconds are added on to the play time with the virtual turning over of the cards. Although this is suppose to add an element of reality to on-line Spades it tends to slow the flow of the game. The large graphics on the cards themselves have a tendency to slow down the playing time by adding another element of distraction. Concentration and the ability to remember what cards have been played are crucial to playing a winning game of Spades. Anything that takes away from this ability will ultimately lend to a longer playing time and more disorganization of thought.

Ultimately, the favorite free Spades web site is Yahoo. With up to 100,000 players on-line at any given moment Yahoo has other Spades sites beat hands down. Yahoo has six gaming rooms which accommodate differing levels of players. There are the Social, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Ladder and League rooms.

When one first starts an account they begin with a rating of 1500. They will remain at a provisional status until they have played 15 games. The rating system is color coded and starts at light gray provisional, 0-1499 green, 1500-1549 light blue, 1550-1599 purple, 1600-1649 orange and ultimately 1650+ red.

Those with a provisional status to those with a 1650 rating should stay in the Social and Beginner rooms. Intermediate and Advanced are mainly reserved for those whose ratings are in the 2000 range. Anyone can enter any of the rooms. However, if your rating is not up to par you will have difficulty finding others willing to allow you to play at their table. It is not uncommon for those with low ratings to be booted from a table.

Yahoo Spades is fast paced and can become quite addicting. There is a small adrenaline rush when you win a game. If you lose it is tempting to start another game in order to win. One fun feature is the chat area where one can interact with the other players. It is important to learn some of the spades lingo such as "gga" (good game all), "nn" (nice nil), and "wdp" (well done partner) in order to adequately converse with others in the game.

Those who are new to Yahoo Spades need to beware. These games can become "cut throat" and name calling and mud slinging is common. Many Yahoo Spades participants take their ratings quite seriously. When a loss means a decrease in their rating a friendly game of Spades can turn ugly fast. However, if one has "tough skin" and enjoys a fast competitive games of Spades Yahoo is the site for you.

Try the different game sites listed above to find the best fit for your style of Spades. The most important element in any card game is to have fun.

i don't know who the author is but she sure doesn't know much about playing spades. yahoo sucks and so does hardwood. yahoo has tables that are too small and the graphics are terrible. contrarty to authors claim you can't get a game anytime either. hardwood has worst moderators on the planet. if I want to be harassed by some tin foil hatted idiot, it sure wont be where i paid to play. when will hw management wake up and realise their mods are running people off because of their backstabbing ways. so much for thinking the owners cared about honesty. hardwood sinking fast and mostly because of a few mods.

I meant to say you CAN'T run a site like Hitler...

Since Hardwood launched their new version the site has been screwed up. Long log in times and many disconnects. Also the price went up, but still they are losing players. The guides run roughshod over players and actually do file false complaints against them. Too many bans and silences over the most idiotic things. Hardwood is becoming a graveyard as all the good people are leaving. You can run a site like Hitler ran Germany...by silencing the masses or sending in a Goebbels type to remove tongues. Oh yeah and they just started their android (NT) which is at the bottom of the food chain in androids.

Absolutely true if you are not in the clic you will be silenced banned or shunned STAY AWAY the owners dont care and hire guides who have there own agenda!!

You don't want to play at this site. The new version is a money pit and not much different from old version. Guides are a big problem for members leaving. They will in fact lie, they have their little groupies spy, they silence over the stupidest things. I am beginning to think they don't even have brains, just time on their hands and a really big ego. When a person does get silenced you don't even know why because the owners/office people won't tell you. In fact they don't even show common courtesy to members by answering emails. Especially Mr. J. There are many broken parts in their programming and the owners don't fix them. Overall the site really sucks. Waste of money.

I have been a member for years, and for the last month I keep getting disconnected or frozen constantly during one game. I had enough of them

Hardwood costs to play there. It is mismanaged and the owners have little respect for the members. The guides as mentioned by "guest' have mob mentality and show prejudicial behavior to their buddies and stalk her members. I don't get why the company would let a few idiot guides destroy the whole site, which is what is happening. people are leaving and going elsewhere because of C & G showing favoritism. Try mentioning politics and the liberal guides silence you for 60 minutes or more. Terrible site. Don't waste your money.

Hardwood Spades is not free. It costs $24.95 for a key. It also has a dropping membership due to severe punishments on conversational topics. The guides (monitors) show a lot of favoritism, so if you aren't in their clique, you will receive "silences" from 10 minutes to several hours frequentlly. Owners fail to listen to complaints which causes hard feelings towards guides and players. The site has not had very much updating in 10 years. Spades, to my knowledge has never had over a 1,000 players at any one time. Aside from the league room, Smoots is the main hangout and it is down from 300+ to 200-250 on a good day now. Average is maybe 80 to 120 in the mornings and give or take 225 or so in the evenings. I no longer recommend this site due to the restrictions on chat topics and biased guides.
