Panera Bread Company is a national bakery and restaurant chain with a huge following. Panera is about to increase that following, according to FOXNews, and it is all due to their 'pay what you want' or 'no price' menu.

Panera has listened to consumers about food pricing and made their newest restaurant in Clayton, Missouri a test site for cheaper dining. The new store, a nonprofit, will operate strictly as a trial run for how Panera could best serve customers price-wise on their meals and still operate the bread company business without going under.

Here's how it works. Mosey on into the Panera Bread Company restaurant and pick up that Bagle pack you normally get for the office. Those 13 bagles and two containers of Honey Walnut spread normally set you back about $13 and some change (can you tell I eat here for breakfast?), but now you get to decide what is a fair price to pay. And, no...I'm not kidding!

The catch? You have to live in Clayton, Missouri right now and go to the most recently opened Panera store to get the food deal price break. But if it catches on in Clayton, Panera promises it will be coming to a town near you (and me) next!

Panera is cutting edge in their willingness to see if dining people will pony up a fair price for their meal. So if you have ever wanted to be able to pay what a meal is really worth in your opinion, rather than the menu sticker price, Panera is making that possible for a select few in Missouri. Hopefully, Missouri folks will not pop in to Panera and pay a penny for something on the menu that should rightly cost a buck, potentially ruining it for the rest of Americans dying to try out this new restaurant approach, but you never know.

So far, the Panera workers in Missouri say that everyone seems to be paying the normal going rate but a few have opted for a half-price meal instead. And there seems to be a little confusion about the fact that customers don't pay a cashier...they are supposed to just drop their money in a donation jar instead (no one's counting!).

What I like about Panera Bread Company and their new approach even more is that the homeless could go in and get a good meal for a penny if they needed to. Or if you ran out of the house without your wallet, you don't have to go all the way home to still get that cup of mojo. You can pay a little extra the next week to make up for it!

But according to the news article, this new Panera store isn't really located in the poorer part of Missouri. It is in a suburb of St. Louis, and an upscale one at that. This particular restaurant test should bode well for the rest of us, since the people who live and eat near this new Panera Bread Company restaurant can probably afford to pay the regular menu pricing. And according to the Fox article, that seems to be the case right now.

Panera has set a basic motto in place for customers to follow. It hangs at the new store and reminds customers what the purpose is behind the new 'no price' menu: "Take what you need, leave your fair share."

One Missouri customer was overheard talking on his cell phone to someone else. He said, "Seriously, they don't charge tax or anything." Panera's nonprofit foundation--and not the parent Panera store--is the do-gooder in this test endeavor, agreeing to foot the cost of the social experiment and see if, in the end, it is a mutual walk between commerce and customer in regards to fairness where pricing and paying are concerned.
