Have you ever heard the term Amigurumi? Maybe it sounds familiar but you aren't sure what it means. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. According to Wikipedia, ami means crocheted or knitted and nuigurumi means stuffed doll. "Amigurumi are typically animals, but can include artistic renderings or inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features." Amigurumi have no specific use, they are just cute. Amigurumi became popular in 2003 and have continued to grow in popularity.

Thinking you might want to give making Amigurumi a try? Patterns can be found online, while many are expensive. Because of the popularity of Amigurumi, selling patterns to create your own Amigurumi has become a popular side branch from the collecting of the finished product. Here is a list of sites that offer free patterns for Amigurumi so you can give this fad a try.

Searching the Lion Brand website brings about 153 different patterns for Amigurumi patterns. They include pictures of the finished products as well as materials needed, the pattern and customer ratings which can be very helpful especially when a pattern may include a mistake, the customers usually find it and make suggestions.

Offers two different categories for Amigurumi, one for animals and the other for food. These lists are not exhaustive, just a list of a few favorites.

A slightly different site than the others. If you are looking for set patterns, this site isn't it. However, what this site does is create a pattern for you from your Amigurumi design. You choose the ears, head, neck, body and so on, decide where you want them placed, designing right there on the site, and once you are happy with your creation, you can generate a pattern for yourself!

Sugar n Cream

Sugar n Cream offers seven different patterns for Amigurumi featuring their yarn. Each pattern is classified as an Easy level 1 pattern. You can choose to view or download the pattern but logging into the site is required, membership is free.

Red Heart

Another yarn company that offers free patters, however their Amigurumi patterns are very limited. There is an adorable pattern for ponies, a heart, and a kitty ornament. These are worth mentioning because they are quite nice.
