Free Patterns for Dog Coats and Boots

Janet Trieschman
If you have a little dog, you know they are small, lack adequate thickness of fur for winter and get cold easily. Small dogs appreciate wearing a coat or sweater in cold weather. Even if your dog normally doesn't like anything on or around him, given the weather, you might find it a different situation. You can buy a sweater or a coat but the sizes don't vary much and usually don't fit well. Making your own, weather it is sewn, knitted or crocheted, you can alter the size to fit perfectly. Here are a few websites that offer free patterns for dog clothing.

Resizable Dog Coat Pattern

This is a resizable vest type coat for dogs. They also offer a dog dress pattern. The nice thing about this pattern is that it can be made from many different kinds of fabric. You can make it two sided or cut from felt or fleece with minimal sewing needed.

Fleece Dog Sweater

This pattern was designed to be constructed out of fleece, which is stretchy and easy to work with. At the bottom of the page, there are a lot of additional links to patterns.

Pet Sweater

This is a pet sweater or rather a pet blanket made from fleece. From what I can tell, it is no sewing. Great for a quick project or one the kids can do with assistance.

Crochet Dog Sweater

This is an easy crochet dog sweater pattern.

Doggie Sweater

This pattern is designed to be knitted. It seems like a simple pattern with a strap that goes around the underside of your dog to secure it in place. From what I saw, there wasn't a picture available of the finished product.

Knitted Dog Sweater

This pattern was originally found at Michael's Craft store. The author adapted it a bit and posted the entire pattern for your use. It's really cute with a rolled collar.

Some of these little canines also need to protect their paws. Here are a few free dog boot patterns that can easily be made to protect your dogs paws.

Winter Dog Boots

These boots are sewn and look a bit more like socks. Very cute and it appears very easy to adjust the size.

Make your own dog boots

Nice pattern but great information about foot care for dogs. Things to consider that affect the dogs feet other than cold, salt and chemicals.

Just what I was looking for! My mini doberman has the thinnest coat I've ever seen, and she hates going outside in the cold.

So easy to change size of dog coat to fit any dog. Minimal sewing makes it easy gifts too! Get a coupon at a fabric store and buy your fabric on sale too. Make them for stuffed animals for the kids for gifts. Reasonable Holidays are possible!
