Free Personal and Family Budgeting Software

Do You Know Where Your Dollar is Going?

Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer
With the economy on the ups and downs, everyone needs to tighten their belts just a bit. Not as much is being spent for entertainment or "piddly things" that are just for fun. At times, it's hard to see where our money is going if we aren't keeping track of it. A few ways to help us see "on paper" where our money is being spent is hiring a financial adviser, or using budgeting software at home. The most affordable route is probably downloading software to use for personal use. If we are already on a budget, sometimes a financial adviser can be costly. It can be difficult to run and organize a household and twice as hard to keep track of each dollar that comes and goes!

The Internet offers a variety of software that is available to help you set up your budget at practically no cost. One free example of this useful software is through the website My Spending Plan. It has been recommended by the Wall Street Journal. It allows you to set up a budget for your family with their easy wizard set up, and you can have it running in little time. List your bills and any categories where you spend money on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Popular categories may include food, clothing, insurance, home, utilities, health and savings. List each item as it is spent, so that you can track the incoming and outgoing flow of your cash dollars. My Spending Plan also allows you to set up when bills are due, and you can receive emails about upcoming payments that must be paid-this way you won't be late for your next payment! The software is free, and there is nothing to download. You can have access to your budget via the web.

If you would like to track your monthly expenses each month, try downloading the Budget Tracker. For each month, you can enter upcoming bills or expenses that need to be paid, and it will add up the total cost. Each expense will be tracked each month, and as more time passes, it will average the estimate of the amount spent on each category. The software is very simple and easy to use-plus it is free for you to download.

Through Money Strands, you can learn to become your own financial adviser. By seeing where your money goes, you can learn how to spend better-and wiser. For more of a visual concept of how your money is spent, the website also provides pie charts, to help you understand the "picture of your money" better. Also, you may sign up for alerts, and it will let you know if you are overspending on your budget, over your credit or even low on your current balance. Money Strands will keep you in check with alerts, and perhaps help you become more aware of your money decisions.

So if you are needing help to create a budget for your family, or perhaps yourself, some of these budget websites and software could help you learn how to get a handle on your money. They are also perfect if you are saving for something specific such as a vacation, wedding, college education-or even your child's college education. Seeing where the money is spent, or watching it add up in your savings, can be a personal self motivation for you and your budget.
