The Chinese New year is a 15 day celebration. This holiday starts on the first new moon of the year and ends on the first full moon. The 15th and final day of the new year is named the Lantern Festival.
There are 12 animals that designate a year for the Chinese. The animal designations for each of the Chinese New Years help with memorization. The twelve animals of the Chinese Lunar Calender are: rat, fox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
