How to Have a Successful Garage Sale

Planning

When planning your garage sale, check the 10 day weather forecast first. If the following weekend looks good, start advertising your garage sale on Craigslist.com and throughout your neighborhood, noting where you have placed your printable signs so that you can retrieve them when the sale is over. You may need to clear your garage sale with your city or neighborhood association.

Selling

Make sure that all items are marked clearly, including those not for sale. Have plenty of change and consider having a locked deposit box. Don't sell dirty or recalled products, or used underwear. If you must sell tattered items, consider keeping the damaged stuff in an area by itself. Remember, presentation is everything. Also, be willing to haggle but don't sell yourself short. Garage sales should have deals, not overpriced goods. Be realistic about your asking price and as the day wears on, consider gradually lowering prices. Keep blank "price tags" handy, as well as electrical outlets for testing, if selling electrical products.

Service

Be available. Keep a book or puzzle outside and make sure that someone is always available. You never know when a customer might stroll by. If no one's outside, they may just pass your garage sale by.

Great tips. It always amazes me when people do not bother to take the time to price the items.

This is good information for future yard-sale entrepreneurs... I'm blessed to have a husband who is the opposite of a pack rat - If it hasn't been used in a month, it's out of here!

If you live in a place where it gets hot in the summer, grab some soda or water on sale and ice it down. Sell them. People may stay longer to look when they feel refreshed. My town charges a Yard Sale permit fee too... so always check with your municipality.
