Free Printable Glyph Activities for Kids

Karen Barnes
Many of us may remember these coloring pages from grade school where we had to color in each of the numbers or letters using a legend to color certain areas of a picture. I also remember having coloring books that were filled with the color by numbers. I could spend hours on end coloring these pictures.

At the time I had no idea that the color by number pages was called glyphs. I just thought they were fun ways to color a picture rather than the usual coloring books your grandma would give while visiting.

If we really thought back to our childhood, there were many activities we had on rainy, cold, or snow days that involved the things that are now called glyphs. The paint by number kits, the water paints by color coded paint books, and even model cars in some cases. Some of the model cars we were given or purchased had numbers or letters attached to each piece that had to be glued together could be considered a Glyph these days.

What is a Glyph?

A Glyph is short for hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics refer to writing stories in the form of a picture. The pictures tell a story with each of the symbols representing a word in the symbols. In case of elementary school students glyphs in their education it allows them to create a data stream that can be transferred into mathematical glyphs so they can organize and analyze the data from these picture stories in several visits.
