Free Printable Pet Coloring Pages for First-Graders

Linda Louise Johnson
Need a class project for first graders to learn to identify unusual animals and pets? Here are links to free printable coloring pages including a skunk, an iguana and a raccoon. For a multi-layered lesson, read fun poetry about exotic pets to the class too.

A poem about "Little Skunk" explains that skunks can be de-scented so they can live in your house. Donna the Iguana's poem tells kids all about her special needs for food and care. The cutest and most unusual of all is the little kinkajou. Click to enlarge the black and white version of the kinkajou picture above, for a free printable coloring sheet.

The African Giant Black Millipede has so many legs (maybe 600!) it's a good thing he doesn't wear shoes. Use the cartoon picture here to show the class, and print out the free coloring page of a centipede. You can explain that centipedes have two legs for each segment of their bodies, and millipedes have four.

The world is full of animals children may not even know about. To teach them to broaden their horizons and to care about animal life, use these poems and free printable coloring pages.

Innovative idea for coloring pages:

A clever way for first-graders to color pictures is to use colored paper torn into little bits and glued onto the black and white drawing. For small parts of the picture, help the children tear the colored construction paper in little bits. For bigger parts the construction paper can be torn into larger pieces.

Weird things you should know about your pet raccoon has good material you can adapt when your students color the free printable raccoon coloring page.
