Speaking as a veteran teacher and homeschooler, I have found that children learn best when they are actively engaged. Planning a unit on weather, science or safety? Here are free printable coloring pages and activity booklets from the National Weather Service.

To get your free printable weather lessons, go to Weather.gov (click here). This link takes to you NOAA, National Atmospheric and Oceanic Adminstration's free printable brochures and materials page. Here you can print materials from the NWS and the Red Cross.

There is a series of booklets to download and print from the Red Cross called Owlie Skywarn. Owlie Skywarn is an owl who teaches children about different kinds of weather. Owlie covers storms, tornadoes, lightning, floods, hurricanes and winter storms. The booklet is 44 pages long and contains lots of pictures to color.

There is another series of printable resources about Billy and Maria. These children explore various kinds of weather and students can learn with them. All the materials include coloring pages, puzzles, word searches and weather experiments.

NOAA has a free printable booklet about tsunamis and earthquakes, too. This resource features Tommy Tsunami and Ernie Earthquake. It explores the relationship between the two phenomena. This booklet is 15 pages long and has several activities. There is a free printable guide to make a weather satellite, too.

FEMA for KIDS is the homepage for kids activities from the Federal Emergency Management Administration. Children can follow Herman the hermit crab as he teaches children about emergency preparedness, weather, natural disasters, Along with free printables, there is a site called Ready.gov. This site helps children create emergency response plans and explore weather related safety.

Weather is great back-to-school kick-off subject for preschool and elementary students. Children have been experiencing weather and hearing weather-related words bantered around all summer long: heat waves, heat index, heat dome, thunderstorm, etc. Why not explore these in your science studies?

October is Fire Prevention month. You could follow up your weather unit with science lessons on fires and fire prevention. Visit Sparky.org for free printable games, coloring pages and activities about fire prevention.

My background is special education, so interactive lesson plans are part of my creed. However general education students learn better when they have hands-on materials, too. These free printable activities are stand-alone. They could form the basis of a unit or lesson plan. They could be used in class to extend a lesson or as homework.
