Ragtime (or rag-time), a precursor to jazz, enjoyed its greatest popularity from 1897 to 1918. The primary characteristic of this music is the syncopated rhythm, sometimes called a "ragged" rhythm. It grew out of the march form made popular by march king John Phillip Sousa (1854-1932), though also infused rhythms found in African music. Scott Joplin led the way with the publication of Maple Leaf Rag in 1899, and followed with a string of hits. Today, Joplin remains the most popular of all ragtimes composers.
