The Entertainer, written in 1902, is a celebrated and classic piano rag. This classic ragtime composition, written by the "King of Ragtime", Scott Joplin (1868-1917), was an influential hit for Joplin in his day, and returned to popularity in the 1970's with the release of an album of Joplin Rags by Joshua Rifkin, and then as music for the feature film The Sting (1973), with Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Scott Joplin (between July 1867 and January 1868 - April 1, 1917) was an American composer and pianist. He achieved fame for his unique ragtime compositions, and was dubbed the "King of Ragtime." During his brief career, Joplin wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first pieces, the Maple Leaf Rag, became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and remained so for a century.

Scott Joplin, the second of six children, was born sometime between June 1867 and January 1868 in eastern Texas. His father was a slave, while his mother was born a free black woman. After 1871 Joplin and his family piano moved to Texarkana, Texas. It was then that young Scott taught himself music on a in a home where his mother worked. Exhibiting musical ability at an early age, Joplin received free music lessons from a local German music teacher. His teacher not only trained him to play the piano well but also gave him a well-rounded knowledge of classical music form.
