History
Silent Night (Stille Nacht) was written by Austrian priest, Joseph Mohr. It was published in English in 1819 by John Freeman Young. This is the English version we still sing today.

Silent Night was first performed at Church of St. Nicholas (Nikolaus-Kirche) in Oberndorf, Austria on the 24th of December, 1818. Mohr had written the words two years before, though brought them to Franz Gruber to set to music on that particular Christmas eve. Mohr requested that the song be performed with the guitar, as it is believed that the Church organ was not working.

Lyrics
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Christ, the Saviour is born.

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
