Free Shows in Las Vegas I Wouldn't Want You to Miss!

Beth Inman
If you are heading to Las Vegas you will be thrilled to know there are many free shows and exhibits in the city's many casinos. You do not have to be a guest at the casino to attend the shows either! There are enough free things to do that you won't need to spend any of that casino money on other entertainment!

The following are free attractions and are not listed in any particular order, just as I remember them!

MGM Grand Lion Habitat

Located in the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, at the southern end of the strip, you will be able to observe these majestic creatures from behind a one and one half inch piece of glass. The lions are on display most of the day. They change lions between 3:30 and 4:30 pm, so there will be no lions there during this hour. There are presentations daily, but I don't think there is a regular schedule for the hands on presentations...think they plan around the creature's moods...wouldn't you?

No reservations are necessary

Freemont Street Experience

Okay, if I was listing in order of favorites, this one would be first. It is a free experience that you can not leave Las Vegas without! Head downtown for this one. It is quite a long walk and not one I would make at midnight and cars are not fun in Vegas, so we hopped on the city bus. An experience, but seemed safe. Sit up front. It will pick up all along the strip and take your right to Freemont Street. Takes you back at night and does not cost more than any other city transit. The show runs from dusk to midnight.

Surrounded by older, less glamorous casinos than those on the strip, you get the feel of "old Vegas". Ninety feet over head, five football fields long is the most amazing canopy you will ever see. With over twelve million LED lights and a 550,000 watt sound system, the canopy comes to life at dusk. The canopy literally becomes a giant movie screen in the sky, with shows and music running non stop till midnight.

Thousands of people, casinos, souvenir shops and the best, tallest Margaritas you will ever see...need I say any more? Don't miss this one.

No reservations are necessary

Aquarium at The Silverton

This one is located five miles from the strip at Blue Diamond and Industrial Road. Open 24 hours a day, the Silverton has an aquarium show. A 117,000 gallon aquarium is home to over 4,000 fish. Stingrays and sharks share this aquarium with the fish, as well as real live Mermaids. The mermaids enter the tank several times each day for a 15 min show. Call ahead for free show times.

No reservations are necessary.

Fountains at The Bellagio

Daily from 3 p.m. - midnight and again on Saturday and Sunday at midnight, you can witness the most elaborate water on earth every thirty minutes.

With music blasting in the background, the water is choreographed to dance beautifully to the music, and it does. Soaring high into the sky and dancing in the lights, this eight and one half acre of water delight is never the same.

There is no reservation required, just walk up to the Bellagio and enjoy. You can't miss it.

Show in the Sky-Rio Hotel and Casino

With the feel of an Italian village, you are transported through the history of some of the greatest celebrations in the world. A sexy show, you are allowed to mingle with all of the shows performers. The show is free, but you can participle for a fee. When? Daily. Thursday through Sunday, from 7pm to midnight. Monday through Wednesday the show features Latin music.

No reservations are necessary unless you wish to participate by riding on the floats. Located just west of the Vegas Strip at Valley View Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

Mirage Volcano

Located right on the Strip, the Mirage features a great volcano show that will amaze. Watching the hot lava flow into the water, you forget that this is a show and is it not really a real volcano. The volcano is temporarily closed for upgrades, but will be opened again this summer. The cost is free, no reservations are necessary, just walk up and enjoy.

Sirens of TI - Treasure Island Hotel and Casino

This is without a doubt the most exciting show I have ever seen. Watch as pirates fight it out in the cove on a real, full size pirate ship. Light, sound, canon fire and smoke all give it a "real" feeling. There is no charge and no reservations are required. However, that said, this is the most popular free attraction on the strip. There are always great crowds, so go early to be certain you get a good spot. It can be difficult to see otherwise.

Daily 7 pm, 8:30 pm, 10 pm and 11:30 pm

Mom lived in Vegas for about 10 years, and now we still love to go back. these are indeed great free shows and some of them, like the pirates, change occasionally so they have someting new to see. Also love walking from hotel to hotel, and the new walkways that have them grouped in 3's and 4's let you get a lot done in one day.

When we visited Las Vegas, the Freemont scene wasn't there yet. I'd love to see that! Thanks for the interesting tidbits on what we can do the next time we visit there.
