Free Sudoku for You

Renee Bodkin
I was reading the newspaper the other day and happened upon the Daily Sudoku game. I've heard all the buzz about Sudoku so I thought it was about time I check it out. Sudoku is a game of logic and reasoning. I like logic so that was a good sign. The rules seemed easy enough as well. The object of the Sudoku puzzle is to fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3×3 box contains the numbers 1 to 9. I spent some time on the Sudoku puzzle in the paper then ran out of time (and patience). Later I decided to do a search online for Free Sudoku games and give it another try. I'm glad I did! I love Sudoku! Online Sudoku (free) is easier with "trial and error" because you can "try" a number in a place then change it (without the headache of erasing or crossing out, as I had to do in the newspaper). I'm hooked! From what I've read many people spend loads of money buying Sudoku books or memberships to game sites. This is not necessary. There are a plethora of free online Sudoku sites for the novice on up to the expert!

WebSudoku.com - This was the first site I happened upon to play Sudoku for free online and is one of my favorite sites thus far! Levels to chose from are: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Evil. There is a "How am I doing?" button which provides clues to your errors or just tells you that you have "x many left to go" if you have no errors. I like being able to check as I go so I know that I'm on the right path. It's a great learning tool for the beginner Sudoku player. Did I mention, it's free to play here?

JigSawDoku.com - Another free Sudoku site! This site is interesting because you have many choices regarding the way your Sudoku game is set up. One difference that is fun is that the player can decide between numbers, letters, and and symbols. The player can also decide on the size of the grid: 4 x 4, 6 x 6, or the traditional 9 x 9. This site is perfect for younger or new players. I first played on a 6 x 6 grid and found the different colored tiles and tiles off to the side (the ones you use to complete the grid) an added bonus! I won and my time wasn't too bad either! Have I mentioned yet that I am really getting hooked on Sudoku? Because I am!

Life.com - Another free site for Sudoku can be found at Life.com (just click on the link for Sudoku at the bottom of the page). Levels to chose from are: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert. This site is a bit more complicated than WebSudoku.com but not in a bad way. This site allows you more options for playing. You can click on a box and a little keyboard of the numbers shows up and you can either fill it in or you can put your "choices" in smaller boxes along the top of the box. Being able to actually see your options is nice though it could also be perceived as more confusing to some players.

Here is one site to AVOID for "free" Sudoku. Sudoku.PlayToad.com asks you to "register", which in itself isn't a big deal, but then you have to click, click, click, click on offers to access your "free download". I "played along" for a handful of pages then decided it wasn't worth my trouble. They now have my name, email address, and birth date. Don't fall into the same trap as I did.

I hope you find these free Sudoku sites as much fun as I have!

Education is important to me. I am a lifelong learner and teach that daily to my students. I am also fulfilling the most important role of my life as mother to 3 active, little boys. Family is the foundatio...  View profile

  • Play Sudoku for free on the web.
  • JigSawdoku.com has games even children could play!
  • Avoid "Sudoku.PlayToad.com", too much work completing offers to even access the free game!
Sudoku is a game of logic and reasoning, not numbers (as many would conclude). It can actually be played with letters, symbols, or numbers!

Stephen, You are so right about the instant feedback. It keeps you motivated to keep going. :)

I have completed only one Soduku puzzle but have tried many. All have been in the newspaper, which may account for the reason I mostly don't finish. These online sites sound great because they give you instant feedback. I'm sure that would help me out. Thank you.

I'm the same way Afton! I like the challenge.

I've played Soduku a few times, but haven't tried out these web sites yet. I am pretty good at the novice or beginner puzzles, but beyond that...I'm not so great.
