Take Advantage of The Mountains
First and foremost, Boone is a haven for those that love the mountains. You need not be a nature-lover to stand in awe of a rolling mountain range or to relax with some friends while breathing in the cool mountain air.
Right on the edge of Boone you will find an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a major mountain road known for its incredible scenic beauty. Simply head out of Boone traveling along Highway 321 until you see the road sign aptly stating "Blue Ridge Parkway next right." You quite literally cannot miss it.
Once on the Blue Ridge, you have the option of heading north or south along this beautiful mountain road. There is no wrong choice between the two; both will take you to some absolutely gorgeous overlooks at which you can take in the sights, take a few pictures, or even bring along a bite to eat while enjoying the view. While you're there, be sure and keep an eye out for one of the many amazing trails you can discover. Whatever you decide, the Blue Ridge Parkway contains a level of natural beauty that is hard to beat.
Another must-see is the legendary Elk Falls, also known as the "Big Falls," likely in reference to the 40-foot sheer drop you will find once you arrive. Located in Elk Park, North Carolina, a small town outside of Boone, Elk Falls has a reputation for beauty and majesty that is unrivaled in the region. Not only can you experience some great scenes, you can also take a dip in the natural pool at the bottom of the falls. The daredevils among you may be tempted to jump the height of the falls -- definitely not recommended!
If you're the sporty type, Boone offers some great areas for biking of both the mountain and on-road varieties. Lance Armstrong has said that Boone was responsible for re-igniting his passion in biking and he often trained the area. If it has the approval of Lance, it's probably not all that bad!
Family-Friendly Cultural Events
Boone offers a respectable selection of summertime events designed to please both residents and visitors alike.
To kick things off, Boone hosts a tremendous July 4th celebration. Proceeding through the quaint downtown district, the procession is "complete with floats, local celebrities, beauty queens, and fire engines," according to Boone-NC.org. After the display is complete, sit back and enjoy a show of fireworks with your friends and family.
Also of note are the monthly art shows which Boone holds free of charge. Designed to satisfy all ages, Boone's "Art Crawl" is held on the first Friday of each month and includes free snacks, local art and free music. The Art Crawl is also located in the downtown district of Boone.
Open every moment of the summer is the Turchin Art Center, a vast Visual Arts center showcasing local and national talent in a variety of art forms. For the adults, be sure to stop by for some free wine and cheese tastings along with your fine art!
A Relaxed Environment and a Place to Savor
Boone's charm lies in its simple pleasures. The natural surroundings provide an incredible environment in which you can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy things at your own pace. There's something to be said for a low-key form of relaxation and Boone provides this in bundles. Whether you're here with friends, family, or just at your own leisure, you can't go wrong when you're connecting with nature and exploring this incredible region.
