Summertime is near, and people are beginning to think about activities both outside enjoying the sun and indoors to escape the heat. And with money demands increasing, events and activities which are free are good news. With that in mind, here is a list of various things to do in Southlake, Texas this summer which are free for kids and adults alike.

Make and Take on June 4, 2007 at 4:00 pm at the Southlake Public Library, 1400 Main Street, Suite 130. Children and parents will make a Brown Paper Bag Card and Tie Card for Dad to take home for Father's Day. To insure that there are enough supplies for all, reservations are encouraged but not required. You may sign up at the children's or check-out desk, or by calling 817-748-8248 or 817-748-8243. This free activity is suitable for ages two through twelve.

Make and Take on August 6, 2007 at 4:00 pm at the Southlake Public Library, 1400 Main Street, Suite 130. Children and parents will make a paper plate sun or a simple sailboat to take home. To insure that there are enough supplies for all, reservations are encouraged but not required. You may sign up at the children's or check-out desk, or by calling 817-748-8248 or 817-748-8243. This free activity is suitable for ages two through twelve.

Story times at the Southlake Public Library, 1400 Main Street, Suite 130. The library holds free story times regularly for small children. Infant Lap Sit features songs, rhymes, and games for kids and their parents and is every Tuesday morning from 10:00 am - 10:30 a.m. Mother Goose Story time is designed for older babies and includes nursery rhymes and pre-literacy skills. This activity is every Wednesday from 10:00 am - 10:30 a.m. Toddler Time is intended for two-three year olds and features stories, songs, nursery rhymes and finger plays and is held every Tuesday from 10:45 am - 11:05 a.m. as well as every Wednesday from 10:45 am - 11:05 a.m. Pre-School story time, designed for four-five year olds, includes stories, songs and other fun activities. It is held every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 pm and every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 pm.

Movies in the Park will be held at the Bob Jones Park, 3901 N. White Chapel, at the softball complex entrance Friday nights from June 15, 2007, through August 10, 2007. The free movies start at 9:15 pm. and include such family-friendly titles as Happy Feet, Curious George, and Nanny McPhee. Those attending are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be moved indoors to the Eubanks cafeteria, located at 500 S. Kimball. These free events are suitable for all ages.

Masterworks Music Series will occur Saturday nights from May 19, 2007 through August 11, 2007 at the Southlake Town Square, Rustin Pavilion, 1256 Main Street, from 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm. These free events are in conjunction with the Northeast Tarrant Arts Council. Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. No alcoholic drinks or glass containers are allowed. Artists include blues/jazz musicians Vocal Trash on May 19th, comedic songs from 3 Fools on Stools on May 26th, celtic music from the Tea Merchants on June 2nd, Vocal Graffitti providing barber shop-style music on June 9th, country music from Empty Pockets on June 16th, the Killdares performing celtic rock on June 30th, eclectic music from Beyond the Pale on July 7th, the Southlake Band with swing music on July 14th, rock courtesy of Zack King on July 21st, blues/jazz musicians Fingerprints on July 28th, David Carr performing jazz music on August 4th, and the music series ending with salsa music from Havana NRG. These free events are suitable for all ages.

Stars and Stripes will be held Tuesday July 3rd at the Southlake Town Square, 1256 Main Street, from 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm. Included in the free event are face painters, stilt walkers, balloon artists, and jugglers. The Southlake Swing Band and Southlake Community Band and Choir will perform as well. The fireworks display will begin at 9:30 pm. Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. No alcoholic drinks or glass containers are allowed. If rained out, the fireworks will be postponed until July 5th.

Remember, having fun this summer doesn't have to cost a lot of money or include a road trip. Look around your own community to beat summer boredom. There's probably more to do closer to home than you realize. Enjoy the summer!
