Free Summer Fun in the Lehigh Valley

Nancy Villasenor
Are you traveling to the Lehigh Valley this summer? Maybe you live in the area and just need to find something free to do for entertainment. The economy has got lots of people down, but you can still have a good time for free this summer in the Lehigh Valley!

Summer in the City

Looking for free lunchtime entertainment on a Tuesday? Until September 29, 2009, Summer in the City is happening at the PPL Plaza at 9th and Hamilton. Free live music from 11:45 AM until 1:15 PM every Tuesday. What a bargain! Great local artists like BC and Company, Sarah Ayers Band, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyer, and the Large Flowerheads are just a few of the bands you can see this summer. In the event of rain, concerts are held in the Holiday Inn.

Musikfest
July 31-August 9, 2009

Musikfest remains mostly a free event. The bigger artists are ticketed events, but most performances are free. You can see just about any style of musical and dance performance at Musikfest. From Irish Step dancing to the Red Elvises, Musikfest is the place to hear just about any style of music. You can even hear the Moravian Trombone Choir perform from the steeple of Central Moravian Church on Sunday, August 2 from 11:30-noon.

Movies
Several area theaters offer free movies. The Rave theater at the Promenade Shops in Saucon Valley hosts a Family Film Festival every Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 10 AM in June and July. There are deals on food, and it's always nice to walk down to the fountain and cool off afterward. Other theaters also offer Family Film Festivals. For the Regal Cinema schedules in Bethlehem, Quakertown. And other locations, visit www.regmovies.com/nowshowing/familyfilmfestivalschedule.aspx?state=PA

Some community parks host outdoor movies during the summer. For a great (and free) family outing, bring your blankets or chairs and movie snacks. The complete movie schedule in the Bethlehem parks, is available at www.moviesgamesnmore.org.

Kids Bowl Free

How would you like your kids to get 2 free games of bowling every day for the whole summer? All you need to do is register on this website at your desired bowling location, and you're set. Your weekly bowling coupons arrive in your email. All you need to do is pay for shoe rental, and you can even upgrade to include the adults for a low price. This is a terrific way to start children off in a sport that can last a lifetime.

Music in the Parks

Several area parks are host to community events and musical performances.
In the Bethlehem Area, The American Legion Band, Bethlehem, Municipal Band, and the Dave Neith Orchestra are among the local performing groups. Venues are the Rose Garden in 8th Avenue, the Ice Rink, and the Ice House. In addition, there are strolling musical groups that perform on Main Street.

Of course, there are plenty of other free fun activities happening around the Valley. Check your local municipality's website to find other freebies, such as concerts, block parties, and other community events. Some other good sites to check:
